Bio

A requiem to the Australian suburban experience and post-modern progress, 'The Lights' is Donny Love's second single from their upcoming sophomore LP Meeting of the Dons, out in late 2020.

Culminating in their most ambitious effort to date and delivering on the promise of previous alt-pop releases by the band, 'The Lights' displays a transformation in Donny Love's songwriting to an expansive, thematic exploration of suburban life, and sees them toying with the old saying of 'progress for the sake of progress'. The thematic core of the song is an exploration of dreary suburban Australia and the Gold Coast, cultural disintegration, and the invasive dominance of advertising and built form over public space.

To deliver on their vision, the band enlisted George Carpenter (engineer/co-producer) and Sydney's Jack Prest (mix/master), whose credits include Bruce Springsteen, The Preatures, Sampa the Great, Kool Keith, Flume. Aided by the production and the song's blaring horn introduction, 'The Lights' summons the feeling of dusk in the suburbs, when the mood in the street turns from the romanticised glow of childhood afternoons to the harsh unnatural aura of streetlights and false neon beacons in the night.

To promote the single, along with the upcoming official music video, the band have let their fanbase in to their creative process by sharing a collage of the life and evolution of the song. To further this idea, the song is being transformed in an upcoming remix by renowned Melbourne artist Traffik Island.

if Puberty Blues make a 2020 reboot, I will be writing some ~very~ strongly worded letters if this song isn't an instant add to their soundtrack.

Donny Love with the perfect arvo soundtrack. I'm soaking this one all up! Energy blossoms and fills with warmth. It just feels natural.

Donny Love has got a live one here. Love the mix of jangly bar room vibes with a glint of mid '60s soul bands.
