EMPRA is a rock band from Melbourne that creates uplifting music filled with good vibes and euphoric sing-a-longs that will supercharge your heart and electrify your soul.

Featuring Sanny Veloo (Lead Vocals, Guitars), Matt Agius (Bass, Backing Vocals) & Georgia Flipo (Drums, Harmonies) the band came together when Sanny decided that the only way to cope with the tragic passing of his best mate was to form a band to keep the rock dreams alive! He called the band EMPRA, which is an anagram of an ancient Sanskrit word “Prema” which means “Universal Love”. Together they set out write and perform rock'n'roll music that would lift peoples spirits.

In their short four year history, EMPRA has released an album, two EPs and two singles. In 2013 their single, Strange Condition was shortlisted for the prestigious Vanda & Young Australian songwriting prize. They’ve been played regularly on Australian community radio, stations in South East Asia and are starting to gain traction on USA College Radio. The band has performed extensively across Australia with a whopping 250+ gigs in the past four years. They've built their fanbase from the ground up to the point that they are now selling out clubs like Cherry bar, John Curtin Band Room and Revolver in Melbourne. The band is also starting to build strong fanbases in Adelaide and Sydney are beginning to pack venues such as Crown & Anchor in Adelaide and Frankie’s in Sydney.

They’ve toured overseas to South East Asia and performed showcases alongside Dune Rats, Jeremy Neale, Tired Lion and performed a full blown arena show with Fall Out Boy who remarked that “EMPRA were one of the first bands on tour that could get the crowd singing along to their songs!”. In 2013, EMPRA took part in an international band competition and was selected to represent Australia in the finals held at the House of Blues at Sunset Strip USA. The band WON by edging out the stiff competition from USA, UK and Europe, especially from a beautiful Californian country singer who was rumoured to be the next Taylor Swift.

Back in Australia the band has had the honour of opening up shows for some of their favourite Australian bands such as British India, DZ Deathrays, Kingswood and Calling All Cars. They even recorded a song with Gotye after Sanny sent him an acoustic bedroom recorded MP3 asking if he could come to the studio and do his “Gotye thing so it would sound like EMPRA jammed with Gotye”. He heard the song and loved it and said yes.

But life on the road hasn’t been easy. The band has gone through 7 lineup changes and a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Probably the most difficult thing was losing two long time band members within three months last year. But things happen for a reason because it allowed the band to find a new drummer in Georgia who out drummed 24 guys in the auditions and breathed new life into the band with her energetic playing and fun loving demeanour. EMPRA went into lock down and spent the last year writing and demoing heaps of new material. They worked hard developing their new sound and amassed a huge catalogue of exciting new material. EMPRA were digging in and getting ready to return stronger, fresher and more EMPRA than ever before! And now they have …

EMPRA are stoked to release ‘Rebecca’ the first single of the forthcoming EP. Inspired by big nights at the iconic Cherry Bar in Melbourne, the tune showcases an exciting new direction for the power trio. Overloading with fuzzy guitars, dirty bass lines, energetic drums, a vocal which switches between falsetto and screams along with catchy lyrics and a huge chorus, this is EMPRA stronger and fresher than ever. With a sound that's an amalgamation of alternative rock greats such as Weezer and Foo Fighters with modern rock heroes like Royal Blood, Manchester Orchestra and Japandroids, EMPRA delivers with an undeniable street coolness and rock’n'roll swagger and continues to lift spirits along the way.

EMPRA kicks off the Rebecca Single Launch Tour in Australia in September, before the band heads back to South East Asia to perform alongside Tonight Alive and to USA for showcases at Culture Collide (LA) and CMJ (NYC). Rebecca is out now on iTunes and Bandcamp.

Triple J

I have such a soft spot for this. Pop hooks, thick guitars, harmonies out the wazoo. Yr the best.
