Formed at Clairvaux Mackillop College in 2011 as a student-run school band, FreeThought finally came to be at the years end after parting ways with former members Callum Halstead, Alex Marzullo and Julian Drakeford. After being a cover band for the prior year Matthew, Tim and Jake set out to write their own material and stretch their own musical abilities. After fellow Clairvaux students, drummer Daniel Hayne and bassist Dalton Bryant came onboard, the group adopted the name FreeThought and started their career as an original progressive metal band. Early in 2012, Tim met vocalist Richard Bakvis through the Conservatorium, who came into the band as a singer, writing and recording two demo tracks. After leaving to focus more on his other bands, FreeThought once again began the search for a new vocalist.
