GIRL is an electronic music duo conjuring queer sounds from the heart of darkness and the city of light (Kaurna Yerta / Adelaide). It is both a creative and romantic partnership between Sweeney and Em. Their music floats between genres fusing pulsing electronic production with dark neoclassical inspired piano ballads. GIRL work as both a touring band and as creators of immersive sound-based performance works.

GIRL have released a series of well-received singles over the last 2 years. Their first, Train/Water, was released both digitally and as a limited edition, sold out 7” record. Train reached #66 on ThreeD Radio’s top 100 countdown in 2017 and Water received widespread national radio play including on Triple J and Double J. In late 2017 the duo embarked on their first National tour of Australia which included shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane and Nimbin and featured support slots from such artists as Shoeb Ahmad (Tangents) and Marcus Whale (Collarbones).

In 2018 they presented their music event, Sentients.

In 2019 they toured their concert, Masc, and performed at Day for Night (Carriageworks), Critical Mass (Next Wave) and inSPACE (Adelaide Festival Centre).

Their debut album, Masc, was self-released in 2019 and is a collection of nine songs and three interludes - a queer scrutiny by way of electronic atmospheres, hard-hitting industrial-infused beats, piano ballads, sweeping string arrangements, poetry, sexy bangers and banshee screams. A glorious contradiction of sounds that defies genre while existing firmly in the now both sonically and politically. The album features the anomalous single 'War' which reached #9 on the Amrap Airit Metro Charts.

Inspired by artists like Laurie Anderson, Fever Ray and ANOHNI, GIRL are currently working with a team of collaborators to transform the music from Masc into an immersive live performance work set for tour in 2020.
