Get to know this week's triple j Unearthed Feature Artist, Godlands!
Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?
My sound is developing all the time it’s hard to really pin point exactly as I tend to be interested in a lot of different genres that end up influencing how I produce my music. It really does depend on the day and the mood, I do get influenced by producers I look up to and tend to grab techniques and use them throughout my music.
What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?
Definitely songs and other producers that inspire me. There is a such a huge amount of music being released daily, with so many different genres of music, you’re bound to find nuggets knowledge everywhere you look. Soundcloud is a massive forerunner in finding those niche songs you wouldn’t normally hear and getting those super eclectic, weird sounds.
What can punters expect from a Godlands live show?
Expect the unexpected and then expect sweat and potential injuries but like the good injuries that were totally worth it. Also potentially getting grog poured down your throat by yours truly.
What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?
'Zon’t zo it, zon’t, zon’t zo it' - Nicki Minaj. It’s probably not exactly life advice but I think about it a lot.
What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?
'Out my face' by me! Hehe. It’s just one of those songs that makes you happy just jumping around. Then I’d give them a shot and flash em and say “ya can’t cry when you’ve been flashed, I don’t make the rules”.
What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?
'Innerbloom' by Rufus Du Sol, this is one of those happy dance floor cries as the festival comes to a close and the [insert party drug] is at its peak. You look over to your mates and you think “I am the happiest I have ever been at this moment right now”. It’s a magical thing.
You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?
'Untouched' by The Veronicas. It’s self explanatory.
What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?
Shhheeeeeesh. I couldn’t tell you. But I reckon by the time this is published it would’ve been the What So Not gig I would’ve done in townsville over the weekend. If I know anything about townsville, they go hard. I’ve missed two flights on two seperate occasions. Let’s hope there isn’t a third.
Tell us about the bands or people in the local music community that inspire you.
I think adelaide won general inspires me. We’ve truly stuck it out through this god-forsaken pandemic and come through stronger than ever. Our nightlife is off the charts and I’m proud that our little city is still booming :)
What are your plans for the rest of 2021?
Going on tour! All of July I’ll be heading around Aus for my Ready 2 Rage tour so make sure you come rage with me because it’s gonna be one helluva time.
