In February of 2016, schoolmates Hayden Atterton (lead vocals/rhythm guitar) and James Pratley (lead guitar/backing vocals) formed an Indie-Rock band in their hometown PERTH, AUSTRALIA. Hayden had recently emigrated from England when he first met James, who shared an immense passion for both music and writing. This sparked continual musical collaborations during their schooling years, and eventually evolved into the band that is now known as Hibiscus.
Hibiscus' musical style is a mixture of upbeat indie rock grooves, driven guitar riffs, dirty instrumental breaks and catchy, singable vocal melodies layered in cohesive harmony. The principal songwriters, Hayden Atterton and James Pratley, aim to achieve such an appealing sound by mixing the ideas of their influences—Hayden leans more towards British Indie sounds such as Oasis, The Stone Roses, The Cure and The La’s while James favours the more alternative, heavier tones of Kings of Leon and Queens of the Stone Age. This perspective is highlighted in their latest tracks, 'Soul for Anything,' and ‘Magnify the Seizure’, which clearly reference a tasty mixture of ideas respectively.
Their debut single, Wish Away (a song that was written entirely over a 40 minute phone call) proved to be a successful start for them, making the top 10 in WA’s “Top 20 Songs” (89.7fm). The song in particular showed off the pair’s ability to compose powerful choruses, relevant lyrics and memorable guitar solos. AMN described the song like so: “"The simplicity with which the song starts draws you closer, before the rest of the band kicks in loudly and grabs you – hook, line and sinker. The song shows restraint in the right places before turning up the dial and there is a sophistication in their song-writing which belies their age."
Hibiscus have performed alongside some of their most revered Australian artists, such as supporting OCEAN ALLEY in September 2017 for their SOLD OUT Perth leg of their NATIONAL TOUR, as well as touring their home state with Great Gable for the release of their single. Their singles have received respectable amounts of radio play across local and major stations, such as 89.7fm and Mix 94.5.
In late 2017, Hibiscus played their first headline show at Scarborough's famous Indi Bar in order to promote their single, Magnify the Seizure. The venue hit CLOSE TO CAPACITY. The band then headed back into Debaser Studio to work on their latest single, Soul for Anything, whereby the band worked closely alongside ANDY LAWSON (2017 WAMAward winner for Best Sound Engineer/Producer), who has found success with some of Perth’s most notable acts (Eskimo Joe, Tired Lion) and is regarded as one of Perth’s best producers. The single launch for Soul for Anything will be held at The Boston, Northbridge, on 26th May 2018.
Despite the undeniable flood of young bands who continue to release engaging original music, Hibiscus are still able to stand out among the crowd and have admiringly earned their place in the Indie Rock scene. An EP has been forecasted for mid 2018, allowing the band to fully show off their diverse songwriting ability and define their sound to an even greater extent.
