Look into the heart of every great song, and it’s a sense of honesty that really makes it stand out. It’s by no means an easy thing to capture, but it’s something the best artists work hard to capture. And bringing that integrity to her music is the driving goal behind emerging Gold Coast songwriter Holly Terrens. Holly has always been surrounded by music – at home, and in church. While learning flute and piano growing up, she soon began dabbling in writing her own music. For her, writing her own songs started as a break away from the discipline of classical learning. But gradually it became her main goal. Softly spoken in person, Holly says her music is now her outlet for her true feelings, the place she can be most honest. She writes about the things that mean most to her…her faith, her experiences and the coastal environment she has grown up in. Today her music ranges from classic piano-driven songwriting, to richly layered and superbly produced pop rock. Drawn to artists as diverse at Ben Folds, Vanessa Carlton and The Dresden Dolls’ Amanda Palmer, Holly says she aims to make music that avoids cliché in favour of creativity. This is an artist who wants to challenge herself, without being clever for the sake of it. That’s the approach she has taken to the production of her debut EP. Having studied a Bachelor of Popular Music at the Queensland Conservatorium, Holly has taken a thoroughly hands on approach to the record working with producer Brendan Anthony to bring her music to life in the studio with a group of gifted players and engineers. Her EP launch will be on the Gold Coast in March 2011 and will be supported by a run of dates that will see her build on her already dynamic live show.
