Born in 2004, ILLZILLA had a vision to bring a new sound to Australia’s music scene by creating eclectic, original music with positive social messages. Fronted with the skills of Mantra, ILLZILLA’S 4-piece rhythm section includes acclaimed reggae producer Mista Savona (Elefant Traks) on keyboards. Together they have forged a unique sound, which has seen them win the Triple J Unearthed competition (Dec.’06), perform at The Falls Festival, Pyramid Rock Festival and play along side artists like Mix Master Mike (Invisibl Skratch Piklz/Beastie Boys), Peanut Butter Wolf (Stones Throw), DJ Cash Money, The Herd and TZU. ILLZILLA have reprinted their debut self titled EP (Distributed by Obese Records); it now contains remixes by DJ Wasabi and CHOI (True Live). Their long awaited debut LP is under construction….

Rooted in hip hop but blending this with soul, funk and RnB, Illzilla have got the perfect combination - a tight four-piece rhythm section topped with two impressive vocalists. The infectious grooves and dynamic energy of this group are sure to get the Festival crowd hyped for a great New Years!
Illzilla are the winners of our VIC Falls Festival competition. More about this competition »
What can the crowd expect from you when you hit the stage at Falls?
Some of the dopest MCing in the country courtesy of Mantra, teamed with the toughest rhythm section around and the soulful Mr. Havea on vocals. We bring hip hop mashed with dirty funk, blazin reggae, lots of energy and a few laughs.
Falls has got a great line-up! Who are you most excited about sharing the stage with?
I’m really hoping that I’ll be able to catch Saul Williams in action, but it looks like we have to make a mad dash for our set at Pyramid Rock over on Phillip Island. We’ve been talking about hiring a helicopter for the day to make us feel like real rock stars and to get us to Phillip Island on time! Talking of rock stars, I would like to watch Wolfmother and see what the hype is all about. Its great to see local crews and good friends Labjacd and the Bamboos on the bill, both those groups are killing it.. Dexter always manages to rip some genius on the decks (must be the Filipino coming out!). I would like to see Blue King Brown, I haven’t seen them perform since I left the band in July…. They know how to excite a festival crowd. I’d like to catch up with Mr. Franti too, I had the amazing opportunity to play drums for him at the Blues Festival in Byron this year.
What’s the best thing about being in Illzilla?
The best thing for me is being surrounded by inspiring, talented friends and creating something meaningful and original together. I’ve been in lots of other bands and have experienced different levels of control freaks and egomaniacs; we have a democracy in the decision making that I really love. It’s a great group to travel with, we’ve just finished a tour with TZU which was a lot of fun… there was lots of outdoor adventure, Bob Knob (The Dictator) was the star of the show, he got washed off a rock into the ocean near Coffs Harbour, tried to climb a cliff near Broken Head before he realised he was scared of heights and went jumping off some rocks into Cataract Gorge near Launceston. Every personality in the group is really different, diversity is a beautiful thing.
...and the worst?
The worst thing about being in Illzilla is all the strong creative minds… it means that a simple idea (musical or otherwise) gets so much input that sometimes you lose sight of the original concept… its not a such bad thing, but something that we have to learn to harness the power of.
What have you got planned for the future? Any New Years resolutions?
At the moment we are working towards getting our album out early next year… it’s not something we’re going to rush to finish though, we all want to make something that we’re all really proud of. We plan to hit the road a lot more too, we’ve only played outside Melbourne a handful of times… Our NY resolution is to take our music to the next level, we stepping up!
Australian music is…
Great! There are so many awesome bands and musicians out there, far too many of them don’t get the recognition they deserve though. I would really like to see our government and communities get behind music and support the arts a lot more than they do at the moment.View Profile Hide Interview
