Bio

Imperial Broads formed as three guitar-wielding gals in a garage in Marrickville, during a freezing winter three years ago. Born out of a desire to make an unholy racket together, the combo came together with designs on creating rambunctious New York punk rhythms while they learnt their instruments along the way. The band's egalitarian set-up shares songwriting duties between Eve Lande, Lauren Crew (Belles Will Ring) and Pip Smith, with its line-up rounded out by honorary Broad Nick Kennedy (Knievel) whose job description is to go nuts on the tubs while the trio of vocalists have a lot of fun out front.

The Broads honed their own brand of sugar-rush pop and throwback garage-thrash through a slew of gigs alongside everyone from Melodie Nelson to Rainbow Chan, These New South Whales to Sounds Like Sunset. Renowned For Sound raved one of their subsequent live shows packed "a powerful set of tunes that saw doo-wop pop and punk collide".

When it came time to record their debut 'Who Are We Turning Into?', the foursome teamed up with Lauren's Belles Will Ring partner Liam Judson as a producer. Decamping to a desolate walnut farm in Wiseman's Creek, just past Oberon, Imperial Broads then set about keeping the economical energy of their live show while exploring their developing chops in a studio environment. "Who Are We Turning Into?" is an album broad (excuse the pun) in scope and sounds. From its rollercoaster punk-blast opener "Since Forever", to the reverberant twang of "Understudy" and the lush harmonies penetrating "Ephemeral" (with what producer Liam also proudly notes has a "Morricone western vibe"), the nine-track record aims to tick all the reference points Imperial Broads had earmarked - four lifetimes' listening to favourites like Rowland S Howard, The B-52's, Fugazi and Elastica, as well as more recent inspirations like Deerhunter and Thee Oh Sees. Get on board with the Broads!

This track feels ominous - but in a gnarly, femme fatale kinda way. Digging the call-and-responses and that final geet solo!
