These six delightful boys from Brisbane can sure write a catchy ditty. You've probably heard their track "Strawberry Wine" on triple j already. They are purveyors of glorious backyard summer pop melodies - and they have adorable baby-faced grins to boot.
The John Steel Singers are the winners of our Big Day Out QLD competition. more about this competition »
What is your pre-live show routine?
Usually having a couple of drinks to ease nerves, going to the toilet to ensure said drinks don't cause an onstage mishap, Hi-5's, group hugs, making sure certain members don't drink too much (I won't name names because Pete and Pat will get upset).
Who on the Big Day Out line-up will you be stage front and centre for?
Yves Klien Blue, Spoon, Arcade Fire, Bjork, and Die! Die! Die!
What is something no-one knows about The John Steel Singers?
Our youngest looking member isn't really twelve, he's actually our oldest member!
What's the best advice you've been given and who was it from?
'Don't do drugs, always wear a condom and get a real job' Pete Steel.
Where do you rehearse?
We rehearse in a permanent rehearsal space that is rent out by Brisbane pop legend D-wizz. Please check out his myspace and listen to the megamix is it seriously fantastic.
What have you got planned for the future?
Well in the next six months we will be re-releasing our EP with some extra tracks and calling it a mini LP. This is mainly cause we didn't do a proper national release for it last time round. Then I imagine we will be playing as many shows as possible up and down the coast. Everything else beyond that is a secret. Too secret even for the third question.
Australian music is ...
... is better than a lot of people give it credit for, we have/had so many fantastic bands. So just to prove my point I will list the first few that come to mind and I bet they're all great. The Go-Betweens, The Birthday Party, Nick Cave, Dirty Three, The Drones, Custard, Not From There, The Stems, The Triffids, The Scientists, The Saints ... I will stop there but I could go for a while. Also as bad as it may sound, get the Young Einstein soundtrack if you can find it, it's amazing.
