Bio

Joni In The Moon’s mesmerising aural flights have been turning heads skywards, with multiple songs nominated for WAM Song Of The Year awards, triple j kudos rolling in and strong community radio airplay around Australia. Yet their upcoming single War & Porn is set to spin them into an interstellar orbit, stargazing siblings Joni and Josh Hogan’s otherworldly take on folktronica and world beats moving in a more heavy synth/electro pop direction, yet with a heavenly dose of experimentation to keep things uniquely ‘The Moon’s. It will be revealed live when the single is launched at Mojo’s Bar in Fremantle on Saturday 1 August.

Whilst based in Perth, it’s easy to get lost in Joni In The Moon’s infinitely layered universe and wonder what planet they’re from. War & Porn’s evolution in sound is also matched by more politically and socially-charged directions than previous work. As Joni explains, “War & Porn is my reaction to how awful it feels watching the news and feeling powerless to help. It's about first-world problem guilt, and the personal battle I go through comparing my own white privilege against global atrocities. It's the issue I have with a western media saturated with sex and violence, and how that infects the minds of our youths who then grow up to perpetrate such things.”

Recorded at Damaru Studio and mixed and mastered at Crank by Lee Buddle (KUČKA, The Merindas, Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu), the single will be sure to see further diversifying comparisons, already of which Tuung, Björk, Sarah Blasko, Flying Lotus, London Grammar, Florence & The Machine and Feist have been made.

Not just a divine studio project, on the live stage is really where ‘The Moon shines, Joni’s captivating presence breathtaking to behold and Josh’s live programming keeping their sound evolving. Joined live by renowned musicians Tara John (Schvendes) on keys, Steve Richter (Tetrafide Percussion, Taal Naan) on percussion and oft Ofa Benness (Odette Mercy & Her Soul Atomics), they’ve been festival highlights at the Beaufort Street Festival, State Of The Art, the WAM Festival, Hidden Treasures and offbeat, as well as wowed whilst supporting touring acts including We Two Thieves, Mali (from Boston’s Jaggery) and Sam Buckingham. Catch the magic when War & Porn sees the band taking new lunar leaps forward, signalling the first signs of intricate life off their upcoming sophomore album...

If you're into Hungarian style operatic chanting in a folk-pop frame, you will probably like this. I didn't know I was into that, but apparently I am.

That refrain really pierces through so much so that you'll either love it or hate it. I'm in the former spot, this hurtles right along.
