Bio

Melbourne-based producer and songwriter Josh The Cat aka Joshua Teicher returns with the first single from his Berlin-made EP Happiness, out Nov 24 2017 via indie German electronic label Freudian Slit and Independent (Australia).

On the lead single (out Nov 10) of the same name, Josh The Cat confronts ghosts and teenage self-medication with beguiling vocal sincerity overlaying anthemic dream-pop slow jams of shimmering guitar, synths, samples and field recordings.

“There’s a bit of irony in the title,” he explains. “In the space that happiness could occupy, we so often end up finding ways to numb ourselves. I wanted to dive into those emotional crevices and investigate what beauty and vulnerability was there.”

Recorded with co-producer Jim Hickey in Berlin, where Teicher resided from 2013-2016 Happiness takes on 90s grunge angst via chillwave and folk-tronica, with elements of ambient and ritual music. The result is disarmingly poignant, heart-on-sleeve lyrics and a vibrant, indie-pop melodicism.

Teicher moved to Berlin after a rich musical apprenticeship in Melbourne’s free-jazz/ambient scene before exploring alternative pop/rock projects, where he worked with industry luminaries and members of Husky, Hiatus Kaiyote, The Cat Empire, Ainslie Wills, Gotye, Georgia Fields and more. Once in Europe he firmly embedded himself in Berlin’s underground music scene, producing music for local artists and touring extensively, most notably with looping-indie artist Phia, with Double J declaring the music “bright, catchy as hell pop”.

Josh The Cat’s first single was lo-fi bedroom ballad ‘Let’s Start’ of which Dom Alessio (Triple J) said, "there's something really likeable about how nonchalant this song is." Pilerats described the track as “a sterling slice of delicate indie-pop”. In 2014 Josh The Cat was invited by Rolling Stone Germany to record and produce a version of David Bowie’s track ‘As The World Falls Down’, from the 80’s cult-classic movie Labyrinth.

After a successful preview show and listening party at Berlin’s avant-garde fashion boutique EXIT, Josh The Cat returns to Melbourne to release Happiness – with the official launch at Fitzroy institution The Old Bar on Thursday 30 November. The show will be a double headline as Phia launches her new EP The Woman Who Counted The Stars, also produced by Josh The Cat.

Happiness EP out November 24 via Freudian Slit/Independent digitally everywhere and limited edition cassette.

Melbourne EP Launch – Thursday 30 November at The Old Bar, 74-76 Johnston St, Fitzroy.

My initial reservation about this one was quickly washed away by the wafting pace and overall package of sweetness.

Your voice is a familiar friend and your melodies equally so. This song is quietly comforting even though I can't quite figure it out the lyrical tone. You've done a good one Josh.
