“I wonder if I could…?” That is how Kirp started. That is also what has driven Kirp for all these years. Based around electronic programming but also incorporating various ‘traditional’ instruments like trumpet, guitar and piano, Kirp is the solo project of Sydney songwriter Tony Hubbard. The debut Kirp album, ‘Be My Guest’, featuring cameo performances by a range of singers from the best of Sydney’s music underground (including voices like Kimberley Aviso , Dave Carter & Hamish Brown of Spectacles and Michael Aiken of Feick’s Device), has just been released. “Kirp has always been my unsupervised playground” says Tony. “Anything is possible.” Kirp is inspired by sound and by groove. “The starting point for all of the music can come from multiple points” Says Tony. “A synth sound, guitar sound or chord progression, a bass groove, a drum loop, a sample, a piano line… Kirp then continues to work in on itself.
