“... neck-snapping linguistic battles and their confinement within the meticulous hip-hop sonnet structure untangled at every opportunity by the experimental jazz jam contingent ... It's a merging that recalls the freedom of The Roots' Illadelph Halflife-era soul/rap duality and the rhythmic hybridity of the early-90s Native Tongues collective.” (Rolling Stone Australia)

7-piece nu-jazz hiphop collab Koi Child have had have had a stupidly busy first year of formation:

The story begins when two local groups - electronic hip-hop trio Child's Play and nu-jazz quartet Kashikoi - decided to get together ("evidently a match made in heaven" - Colosoul Magazine) for an experimental jam night in Fremantle.

The night went down well enough to catch the ear of one nearby Kevin Parker, landing them a support with Tame Impala at Rottnest Island for Koi Child’s second gig, where they "managed to get a completely sedated crowd on their feet and grooving" and "genuinely felt like a band who'd been kicking around for years" (

Their debut single 'Slow One' was premiered through Rolling Stone Australia and got extensive radio airplay - BBC Radio 1, triple j, FBi Radio, and lovely locals RTRFM 92.1. Meanwhile, the band played capacity festival & headline performances around Perth, including Groovin' The Moo and 2014’s Beaufort Street and Norfolk Lanes festivals, along with supports for acts like The Preatures and @Peace. Koi Child finally found some time to venture off on an island in the south-west late last year to record their debut offering with Kevin Parker at the helm.

'Black Panda' is the first taste of that upcoming record, and takes a hard turn into far more aggressive and raw territory than 'Slow One'. Read the premiere interview with Pilerats along a series of very pretty photos from the island recording sessions shot by Matsu Photography:
