Bio

Hailing from the rolling green hills of north-east Melbourne, garage band Lupine began as the solo project of singer, songwriter and guitarist Thomas James. The project quickly morphed into a five-piece band when James asked high-school buddies Dean Tosis (bass), Lily Sawenko (keys), Tom Putland (guitar) and Jake Leahy (drums) to join him.

After honing their sound with regular jam sessions at James’ outer-suburban bungalow, the band took their set to the red sands of Alice Springs for a slot at the 2013 Wide Open Space Festival. Upon returning home, the band threw themselves into Melbourne’s live music scene and have been gigging ever since, playing regularly at well-known venues such as The Workers Club, The Evelyn, The Old Bar, Bar Open and The Grace Darling.

With an evolving sound that is an eclectic mix of indie rock, psych-pop and surf, the band’s single Tell-Tale Heart, released in late 2018, was described by Dublin based music blog Barry Gruff as, “easy on the ear, chorus-drenched and melodic guitar-pop that bounces along on a fast-paced, giddy, skittish rhythm through playfully infectious and sunny melodies and perfectly complimented vocals leaving us with something that is fantastically infectious and approaching guitar-pop perfection.” The single went on to receive plays on Triple J and rotation on Triple J Unearthed as well as praise from music blogs in Australia and abroad.

In February 2019 the band supported Sydney-siders Lime Cordiale on the Victorian leg of their ‘Money Tour’, playing to sold-out venues including the iconic Gershwin Room at St. Kilda’s Esplanade Hotel.

Next up for the band is a trip back into the studio with Grammy Award-nominated producer Nick Herrera to add finishing touches to their upcoming EP, due for release in late 2019.

Some of the chords in this track are pure whack! They're like sherbert on my ears - tingly! Love the laidback garage sound though - it's super sweet and the drums just makes my day.

lupine heading up the escalator with this one, it's warm jangly garage that has me sucked right in after a few listens. there's a bit of augie march with added oomph.
