The Magnetic Letters lived inside an icecream container, until Merle sacked the lot of them and started recording real people. Tasked with recording 28 musicians, some of whom are mortal enemies, Merle opted to capture them individually and let the computer make it sound like they were in the same place. The resulting project was recorded/mixed largely with the binaural process - Merle made a cast of his head and stuck two microphones inside it. Then he took it to Coogee beach and recorded seagulls (uncredited - they were locked into a contract with EMI).
