Bio

Born in Australia to Egyptian parents, Sawires was raised in a creative, multi-generational home in Sydney’s Inner West, surrounded by parents, grandparents and five siblings. Music was always there: Mariam’s father played traditional Arabic songs on the tabla, while her mother enrolled her to play the piano between homeschooling lessons. From outside, the sounds of Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder, Queen and Erykah Badu electrified and inspired Mariam’s early years.
Back in Australia, the next chapter of her career began to take flight. In the last eighteen months, Mariam has been profiled by SBS, played at Sydney’s Lansdowne Hotel in support of NZ act LEISURE and been selected as a showcase artist at BIGSOUND 2019. Amidst this, she returned overseas for a three-month songwriting stint where she sequestered herself in a 17th century castle in France.
Now, Mariam is ready to share ‘Choose’, the most crystallised realisation of her musical vision so far and her first official single. Out August 23, ‘Choose’ was written in that French castle, where Mariam was surrounded by thousands of books by philosophers, poets, historians and leaders. A visit from a family member helped her see her own life in a new light and afterwards, she returned to Egypt to stay with her grandparents in their Cairo apartment.
With Mariam Sawires, music has gained a visionary new talent.

You do this so well Mariam. I love the way the rolls kick in and your voice is so complimentary. There's an ethereal presence about it. Gorgeous debut.
