Matthew Armitage is an accomplished multi instrumentalist, songwriter and singer from New Zealand, who has worked with a broad mix of NZ Bands throughout his career, (Good Laika, Odessa, Bunnies on Ponies, Family Cactus, Ginger Brown and Boomshack Band) some taking him overseas to Berlin and New York, but only in the last couple of years has he exposed his own unique voice and songwriting talents.
Armitage followed his heart and relocated to Australia in 2013, quickly finding his feet as solo bluesman amongst the eclectic and thriving music scene of Byron Bay. He released his first EP, Over Oceans, in 2014 which merges raw garage blues, South Pacific soul and mellow psychedelia, showcasing Armitage's first chapter as a solo musician. Standout track is 'Calm down' with its melodic guitar and chill vibes with a video to match by award winning photographer, Trent Mitchell.
2015-2017 saw Armitage become a dad and record his first studio album while also gigging the east coast over 250 times a year, both solo and with his two Aussie bands- popular Byron Bay 60's cult Hollywood, surf, jive and blues duo, The Swamps and another duo, Chesta Hedron, an all original, heavy psych, kraut rock, surf instrumental band who released a 5 track EP Infinite Nought April 2016. They are both popular amongst the surf industry with a Swamps track used by Rip Curl and Chesta Hedron tracks used as a sonic back drops to Quiksilver Pro 2016 contest wrap videos- Radical Times on the Gold Coast and Radical Times in Western Australia, and more recently a Sabre Eyewear campaign releasing in early 2018.
Now in 2018 Armitage is still sharing his musical and songwriting talent on the gig circuit, often collaborating with other talented musos and is excitingly about to share his first solo album, New Tide, set for release in Autumn 2018.
