Matty Devitt- vocals & rhythm guitar Wes DeWitt- Lead guitar Rich Atherton - lead & rhythm guitar
On Tuesday 12th August 2008, Matty Devitt was announced as the winner in the Indigenous Category for the QSong Awards for his song, Power. Matty Devitt is an Australian singer/songwriter on his way- and definitely worth a listen! Combining modern musical influences with the spirit of his Aboriginal heritage, he has created his own version of Alternative, Acoustic rock. Originally from Coffs Harbour, Matty started out writing songs and singing with local bands. After moving to Byron Bay in 2000, he started learning guitar to support his naturally strong and passionate voice and before long, he was performing solo gigs to intimate crowds and keeping their undivided attention. In 2003 he made the move to Brighton, UK, where he formed a band playing his original songs. The band enjoyed much success on the Brighton circuit, playing such venues as the Prince Albert, Pressure Point and the Concorde 2. Now, he’s back in Australia, back to his roots, performing gigs to intimate and larger crowds in venues around the Sunshine Coast area, Byron Bay and Brisbane with more passion and confidence than ever. In March 2008, The Matty Devitt Band took out first prize in the Bundaberg Rum Blues over Byron Busking Competition, winning themselves not only the coveted prize of performing on the APRA Stage at the East Coast Blues and Roots Festival, but also, the fantastic opportunity to record their album at Studio 301 with Tom Misner in Byron Bay- a project they undertook in May 2008. On his new album, Chosen This Life, he is accompanied by the incredible musical talents of Richard Atherton and Wes Dewitt who compliment his original material with their own signature styles. Matty was recently awarded the prize for Best Song in the Indigenous Category for the QSong Awards for his song, Power, which features on the album. In 2008, The Matty Devitt Band performed at the beautiful Sunshine Coasts’ Caloundra Music Festival and was also featured at the Tin Can Bay Music in the Park Festival. Their debut album, Chosen This Life, is due out this January.
