Bio
Mia Rodriguez creates quirky dark-pop that spans the divide between alternative indie and melodic mainstream styles. Based in Sydney, Australia, she is inspired by a blend of all genres of music including K Pop, mainstream pop, and hip-hop, yet the newcomer has arrived at a style that is her own led by a distinct vocal style. She started posting videos on TikTok growing her audience to over 2million fans in just over one year. Working with producer Dave Hammer (Lime Cordiale, Thundamentals, Jeffe) she has begun to release tracks which reflect her unique dark humour and personal style.
Meet this week's Feature Artist! Sydney 17-year-old pop star Mia Rodriguez!
Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?
I normally listen to music and dissect other artist's songs, and list things I love about about them. If I love the sound of their bass line for example, I’ll mix it in with other things I find to make my own song! It’s all about putting everything I love into one piece.
What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?
(Same answer as the previous question).
What can punters expect from a Mia Rodriguez live show?
I have this character in my head of who I want to be, and you can see this in my music videos. I want people to experience a true performance, of a true character. I want to bring back the art of visually entertaining people, while singing of course. Kind of like a musical.
What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?
My mum always tells me to not care what other people think. She’s always been supportive by letting me be my own person. I was bullied a lot for being different. But in my opinion, caring about what people think shapes you into this unbelievably boring person! Wear what you want, be yourself. People are uncomfortable with what they don’t understand, and that’s okay.
What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?
Billie Eilish came to Sydney a few months ago. She was super cool, she has such good stage presence. I always get so inspired by live performances. I just think; gosh, I wish I was up there!
What are your plans for 2020?
My plans for 2020 is to make music, and keep growing. I’m super excited to perform live as well. Also working on my mental and physical health of course. Gotta have those self care routines!
