Meriki Hood is a strong Aboriginal Kunai and Gunditjmara woman from the eastern and western districts of Victoria. She has been in the hip hop and urban rap seen for the past 10 years starting song writing and composing music at the age of seventeen.
She considers her music as a way of reaching out to her people and showing them anything is possible when you follower your dreams. Meriki also met her best friend and father of her beautiful daughter Lyrik while performing on stage in 2003.
She has completed over 6 years of music studies including business and management skills. She has complete two Songlines mentorship programmes, participated in Framework song writing and producing courses and also has certificates 1, 2, and 3 through Bunjil Music Projected while working closely with Mushroom Marketing one of the leading sectors of Mushroom Records.
Meriki’s dedication to developing her craft also saw her completer her certificates 2 and 3 in music production and sound engineering. She has also co-hosted the Koori Survival and Hip Sister hip hop shows on 3CR radio and its Payback Time on 3knd Radio station. She has coordinated countless music song writing and radio workshops from the indigenous youths and troubled teens of Victoria.
Also working in the Dame Phylis Frost women correctional facility by teaching music is a therapeutic form of healing and self-expression through song writing, she has been strongly involved with the beyond the bars prison broadcast project for NAIDOC Week.
Meriki has been very committed to the Aboriginal community for the past 9 and a half years participating in fund raising events and performing free support acts for the opening aboriginal organization and raising cultural awareness. She also likes to practice what she preaches by not drinking or smoking and voicing her opinion in two strong heartfelt songs based on the negative effects of drugs and alcohol and the devastating consequences that it has on the youth and young families today she definitely feels that this is a big step in the right direction for being a roll modal in the Aboriginal community.
Meriki has featured on Mr Morgz album and currently collaborating on Johnny Mac new album the Mac Hood Experiment. She has been nominated for the VIPA Award in 2012 and nominated twice for the best Indigenous female artist of the year for the Bump Awards also winning the best female hip hop group of 2013 Fatal Attraction. Meriki Hood has currently worked on the all strong and sexy female group Fatal Attraction for the past 2 and a half years with their fun party vibes and there no mess around attitude they are definitely turning heads and proving that they can hold their own in a male dominated industry.Meriki has opened acts for the Jessica Mauby, Soulja Boy, Savage, J Kwon, Maupower,Yung Warriors, Alter Egos, Last Kinection and the well-known Outlawz and also getting positive feedback from Publics Enemy’s own Chuck D. Meriki also performed at the after party of SnoopDogg Bone ThugzN Harmony and Ice Cube in 2008 she has been working closely alongside Payback records for the past 5 years.
Meriki Hood has also been a Involved with IHHP( Indigenous Hip Hop Projects) Traveling to remote Aboriginal Community’s all across Australia teaching Indigenous kids how to wrote song, make up dance routines and making film clips.
Meriki Hood has also been a part of the Skin Choir Joining in 2011 Created by Song lings very own Jessica Lloyd. Through Skin Choir Meriki has had the amazing opportunity to tour New Zealand and supporting other big name acts like Christine Anu, Archie Roach, Street Warriors, and Kutcha Edwards. Meriki Hood released her first EP in 2012. she has also toured all over Australia with her music and also toured around America for 3 weeks with Red Fern Records in late 2013 collaborating with amazing hip hop artist such as Lennox Buppy Brown and Country Fire giving her a spot to perform one of her hit songs Its Fatal at Uncle Pepps Night Club in Long Beach Lost Angeles. Meriki Hood also got through to the third Round of the 2013 X Factor performing in front of Judgers Ronan Keating, Natalie, Bassingthwaighte, Dannii Minogue and Redfoo
She has also been working closely with the femurs international DJ Marcus Night and amazing sole singer Tash Night Releasing the hit Single Stronger earned them a spot on the Marn Grook Footy Show Channel 2 on NITV. Meriki Hood was also there to perform for the Long Walk Press Release for the 10 year anniversary at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl and was filmed by the Channel Nine News Team.
Meriki Hood has been on Channel 10 Channel 9 Channel 7 Channel 2 NITV and also Foxtel on a few different occasions. Her stories have also been featured in the Harried Sun, The Local, The Leader, The Age and the Korrie Mail. She has done countless radio interviews on 3KND, 3CR, Zink FM QLD, AND Noongarra Radio WA. She has also had the amazing excipients of performing for the Melbourne and Cairns BUMP AWARDS the 2012 VIPA Awards the Australian AWME Festival Federation Square Dream Time at the G Foot Ball Stadium St Kilda Festival, Hamer Hall, The Melbourne Art Centre and much more. Meriki Hood is currently working on her up and coming Album Miss Hood Its Fatal and will be releasing at on may the 31st 2014 at the Dream Time After Party
With over a decade of experience under her belt she has definitely proven a force to be reckoned with. Meriki with her amazing sounds and mixture of hip hop, rap, R’n’B and soul, she is certainly in her element when she’s on stage.
