Bio

Abstract R&B unit MKO SUN creates iridescent, multi-dimensional music that is reminiscent of the R&B/soul tradition, yet abstracted lights years beyond it. Vocal artistry dances upon an eclectic musical palette, where fearless artistic decisions reign supreme.

MKO SUN is the dreamchild of Hannah Macklin – multi-faceted singer, songwriter, producer and artist, whose wild imagination fuels MKO SUN's fire. Her songwriting marries together a vast array of influences; from Stevie Wonder to Bjork; from Bacharach to hip-hop; merging everything from scored orchestral music to Neptunes-esque beats. Textures are varied and layered not “just because”, but to create infinite sonic spaces and dreamlike places.

MKO SUN's third and freshest EP, Opus Opalus (released November 2015) is a cinematic and cosmic experience which explores the range of emotions and experiences that arise in the aftermath of a loved one's passing; an experimental foray which transports elements of R&B, soul and hip-hop to another realm (one which exists outside the constraints of the modern pop song). Lead singles Michiko and Black Seaweed, and their corresponding videos, made in collaboration with Brisbane filmmaker Mia Forrest and makeup artist Billie Weston, are, in THUMP magazine's words, “another example of MKO SUN's dexterity and prowess as one of the most promising talents in an exciting period for Brisbane electronic talent.”

In a live setting, MKO SUN is an explosive 3-piece, bringing together the talents of Steele Chabau (bass, synths) and Myka Wallace (drums, samples) with Macklin dancing between vocals, keys and synths. MKO SUN has played support slots for Peaches, Cody ChesnuTT, Fatima and Hiatus Kaiyote, and opened for Katie Noonan on her national album launch tour (October/November 2015).

Emerging in late 2011, MKO SUN has since released 3 EPs, a beat-tape and a smattering of standalone singles. 2013 single “Snarly” garnered worldwide praise and following its success, MKO SUN has steadily grown her fan base independently; with faith that her music is good enough to be heard - and relying predominantly on word of mouth to get the job done – MKO SUN’s music has reached the ears of luminaries and now-fans Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) and Bilal (US), Fatima (UK) and Katie Noonan and Paul Mac (AUS). MKO SUN won a 2013 QMusic Award for "Snarly" (Best Electronic/Dance Song), and in 2015 was runner-up in the awards' Most Popular Female category.

"Hypnotic, psychedelic and extremely fucking talented are just a few of the words that come to mind when you experience MKO SUN‘s musicianship...” PURPLE SNEAKERS

"MKO SUN is not your typical musician. In fact, it feels strange to refer to her as anything other than an artist..." FRESH BEATS

"Earning her stripes as one of Australia’s most exciting new talents...” MUSIC FEEDS

"Multi-medium project MKO was a stand-out. Not only was it the apple green crop and amazing modern art she had hanging from her earlobes, but it was seriously a 10/10 show. The experimental modern pop goddess with 2 EP’s under her belt truly delivered a mesmerising and inventive live set, encompassing everything a kick-ass live performance should...” AAA BACKSTAGE

"What would you say if I told you I knew of an act that combined the experimentation and freeness of the Dirty Projectors, the sultry moodiness of James Blake’s songwriting and beats and the beautiful vocal stylings of Erykah Badu?" DON'T NEED NO MELODY (USA)

“MKO is putting Brisbane on the map of urban electronic soul in the same vein as Quandron, Little Dragon, AlunaGeorge and James Blake...” MERCEDES BENZ MIXED TAPE (USA)
