My Own Pet Radio is the name given to the bedroom recording project of Sam Cromack, frontman, singer and songwriter for Brisbane's indie rock/pop collective Ball Park Music.
Tell us about your music - how did you develop your sound?
I usually can't last more than a week without writing or recording a song. I've always loved recording. A lot of the songs used in My Own Pet Radio are just songs that never made it to the Ball Park rehearsal room. I often get an idea and I'm just so excited to hear how it would sound, so instead of being patient and showing real musicians I just start recording it and playing everything myself.
How do you know when a song idea is for My Own Pet Radio rather than your other band Ball Park Music?
I think a lot of the songs could very well have been performed by Ball Park. It just depends. If I write quiet, weird or sad songs - which are usually my favorite - they'll nearly always end up as My Own Pet Radio songs. That way I don't have to bore any audiences or band members.
How would you feel about My Own Pet Radio going from a solo project to taking on band members?
I've actually done two shows with a full band. That was a lot of fun, at least for me anyway. I'm keen to try lots of arrangements in this project. I think, most importantly, it shouldn't ever feel stagnant. I have a few key collaborators, but I'd like to have a rotating line-up. I think soon I will endeavor to do some shows by myself at some smaller venues.
Tell us about the bands and people in the Brisbane music scene that inspire you.
I've met a lot of lovely musicians in Brisbane. I always remain inspired by the scarier songwriters; Ed Guglielmino, Shem Allen, Kate Herrington and my housemate Ben Fahey is the best songwriter you've never heard of. I also enjoy being in the studio with producer Matt Redlich. Ball Park has been working with him, and he's full of interesting info.
What’s coming up in 2011?
Well Ball Park keeps me pretty busy, but I'll be aiming to book some shows for My Own Pet Radio. I also continue recording. I still have plenty of recordings lying around, though if I organize another release I think I'll discipline myself a little more this time... work a little harder to choose the best songs and record them properly.
Australian music is?
...worthy of more than one sentence. There are too many wonderful things to capture in this short summary.

I knew that voice was familiar! This is wonkier and more technology influenced than your Ball Park Music work but shares that undeniably catchy pop bent. You've got a knack for a tune my friend

Love this song, the loping beautiful quality of the melody, that great vocal and the mood of it all. Beautiful.
