Artist: The Papernecks
About
“The Papernecks” is the soloish project of Melbourne based recording artist Matthew Storey. With a focus on simple melodies and structures, at the base of more dense and layered phonics, Matthew draws much inspiration from the great classic and contemporary folk and rock songwriters. Many themes are developed from unique observations, odd conversations and misunderstandings, while other songs owe their lyrical content to the personification and exaggeration of commonplace experiences. Regularly, Matt finds himself bending hindsight into loose, inwardly aimed advice and narratives. The Papernecks’ “hangover folk” sound has been compared to Nick Cave, Beck, Tex Perkins, Mark Lanegan and Leonard Cohen, as well as the occasional, possibly misdirected, mention of Nick Drake and even Radiohead. Matt attributes his layered approach to, among various musical influences, his other lifelong loves; visual art, design and literature.
