Less than a year after forming, The Phazes unleashed their 2016 debut EP Holiday to a rapturous response. Over the following 12 months the band produced two highly acclaimed singles – Sunflower Bean and Revolver – cementing them beyond question as one of Australia’s most exciting new bands.
Based in Sydney’s famed northern beaches, The Phazes bring a unique, summery twist to what would be more traditionally a New York rock sound. This signature flavour reached a new peak with 2019’s ‘Manners’ EP, created with Birds of Tokyo’s Ian Berney at the helm.
Already, The Phazes have been swathed in glowing reviews, praising everything from the technical aspects of their thoughtfully-written songs, to the intangibles: that inexplicable magic we all know as “vibe”. The bands triple j Unearthed page is a veritable constellation of four and five star reviews, with the unanimous consent being that The Phazes have that extra special something, and have it in spades. Coming off the back of a massive year, The Phazes closed out 2019 with their hit single ‘Manly Vale’, which received generous airtime on Triple J.
Now, with a new year underway, The Phazes return with their follow up single ‘Hollywood’. Breaking the shackles of their previously chartered musical confines, ‘Hollywood’ redirects The Phazes sound to an exploration of staggering melodies and carefully crafted songwriting.
The song transcends anything the band has previously brought to the table and is evidence of the band growing and developing their already immersive sound. Hollywood is a credit to The Phazes musicianship and is a clear statement: 2020 will be The Phazes biggest year yet.
