Best described as a sound somewhere between the Beach Boys and Nirvana, Pirates Alive are a garage-rock band that infuse a grungy flavour with their sun-bleached surf style, a sound that is turning heads and making waves around the country. The three-piece formed late 2010 and consists of three mates from school who grew up on the Gold Coast, who enjoy a surf-drenched lifestyle with a soundtrack to match. Their music draws from a wide range of bands the three listen to, with favourites such as Kings of Leon, Black Lips, Tame Impala and The Vines to name a few. This wide range of influences shines through through both their live performance and on their EP’s. Their debut EP was titled “Beach Daze,” recorded by Dusty Anastassiou (Woe & Flutter vocalist) at Griffith University studios on the Gold Coast. The 4 track EP, was released early last year, which led to the bands success in 2012, playing a list of awesome shows such as Gold Coast’s Big Day Out, Surfers Paradise Festival, Bleach Fest and Brisbane’s Big Sound. They also set sail on their first tour supporting garage favourites Step-Panther on a Sailor Jerry infused roadtrip. These tracks graced the airways of both Triple J and Unearthed digital radio and also featured in a load of webcasts such as Volcom Surf Team and Quiksilver Snow team videos. Their lead single “Sunshine Girl” also was featured on the global broadcast of the 2013 Quiksilver Pro. “Beach Daze was a great place to start the writing/recording process with,” described guitarist jarryd. “These were our funnest, catchiest and most simple songs and they just felt right to record first.” Since then, The band has spent the better half of 2013 writing and recording their follow-up EP. After six months off live shows, the band has returned stronger than ever with their sophomore EP “Wasted Souls” recorded by George Carpenter (Mourning Tide, Rogerthat) which features five new tracks, each bursting with energy and diversity different from the last. “We really wanted to step it up with our new recordings, shared vocalist Michael Cottrell. “These recordings dig deeper in terms of song writing and layers… We couldn’t be happier with how they have come out.” Pirates Alive are now going to enjoy a wild summer playing loads of awesome shows and sharing their new sounds with their friends and set sail on a launch tour playing shows through September and October. Upcoming Shows 27 Sep – Elsewhere, Gold Coast 28 Sep – Great Northern, Byron Bay 6 Oct – Beach Road Hotel, Bondi 19 Oct – Secret Show, Gold Coast 25 Oct – Allhambra Lounge
