P.Smurf is a celebrated hip hop MC and co-founder/manager of the Sydney Independent Hip Hop label, Big Village Records. Having established strong repute through his collaborative projects, Daily Meds, Reverse Polarities and Sketch the Rhyme, P.Smurf recently released his debut long awaited debut solo album ‘Playin' The Blues’, a hard hitting look at the current state of the world.
His charismatic style of socially and politically charged lyrics, delivered with ferocity and percussive flows, have earned him a strong, loyal fanbase. From the release of his 2013 EP “The Story So Far”, to multiple mix-tapes and two 7” vinyls, all while touring extensively across the country.
P.Smurf has played an integral part to all his numerous musical endeavours, including Daily Meds widely successful debut release, Happy Daze. The album was shortlisted in the top 9 of the 2012 Australian Music Prize, it was awarded FBi‘s Sunsets “Album of the Week”, while the 3rd single “Insane” was also added to Triple J high rotation.
His debut solo album Playin’ the Blues offers the listener a glance into the life of the prolific MC, with tales of late night debauchery and lost love, to veracious accounts of humanities struggle to find balance and relief within an unyielding capitalist system. With production handled by Melbourne aficionado Must Volkoff and 2004 NSW Triple J Unearthed winners Down Under Beats (Platterpush & Codeks), ’Playin’ The Blues’ blends influences of jazz, reggae, blues, latin and funk, reminiscent of 90’s East Coast Boom Bap. Combined with a distinct, localised flavour, somewhat scarce in todays musical climate.
