Bio
Take the trail out of Perth via Leederville and keep on driving, and you might just stumble across an old horse shed – one where weirdness roams free. Across the bridge from said shed, house parties rage until the early hours and beyond, while around the corner there’s a sky-high pile of trash that acts as a makeshift home for the local rat population. It’s here, amongst jam sessions that would last six-hours plus, that the wacky, sprawling sound of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets was born. Psychedelic Porn Crumpets’ night-long jam sessions and unconventional abodes are just the tip of their iceberg of happy accidents.
Jack and pals needed something visceral. “We took the harder approach – big riffs,” he says with an audible grin, “When you’re on a site for six days a week, it’s nice to get back in the evening and go ‘RAAAAARGH’ into a mic.” That primal, intuitive style followed them through to their live shows, which would see the band writing a song one evening, and playing it in the local pubs the following night, inciting mosh-pits and wig-outs with barely a pause for breath.
That unforgettable name is yet another example of their go-it-alone approach - “I wanted something memorable like marmite – you either love it or you hate it,” laughs Jack. One thing’s for sure - the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets’ tale is already one for the ages.

Perth outfit Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are this week's triple j Unearthed Feature Artist. They're all about their "hong lair & reavy hiffs" and are about to set foot in the UK, Netherlands, Germany and France for a run of dates.
Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?
We've been jamming together in various bands for years now. PPC started out as a recording project in a barn that described our late night adventures and colourful encounters with the magic men. We played around with genres until we captured something that resonated the same energy as our weekends had.
What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?
A good movie always works, directors like Wes Anderson or Terry Gilliam get the think tank in gear. We've got a taste for the absurd, anything quirky that challenges normality. A good night out is always a strong catalyst for inspiration too, most of life's stranger tales stem from a few pints. A podcast on A.I's, a Bill Hicks routine or an article on the simulated universe theory help to unbox ones' self as well. A break from music is another, if you flood your ears you'll fatigue yourself and nothing will come out, a week of using a different sense will retune your other cognitive responses and maybe you'll wake up with a melody in your head from smelling a wood fire.
What can punters expect from a Psychedelic Porn Crumpets live show?
Hong lair & reavy hiffs. It's like a Lewis Carroll themed, quasi-punk carnival that resides in the lost pages of a Hunter.S.Thompson novel.
What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?
I've always loved the advice of Groucho Marx, would have been cool to meet him. My dad always says, 'engage brain before opening mouth' which is logical and has worked well. He also said "If you take all the 'D's out of Edward Woodwood you're left with Ewar Woowoo".
What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?
Would be amazing if Smashmouth were Australian, so in that case, we'll go Horses by uncle Dazza.
You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?
The BeeGees with 'Stayin Alive'. Put the desk on 11 and it'll make the most hardcore, bearded Slayer fan raise their VB and mutter 'tune'.
What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?
Pot Plant House Party at the Indi Bar was a noteworthy show, great band. Danny said he went to an 80's disco party and got his Forest Gump on. We saw Spacey Jane at Badlands a few weeks back that was pumping, they'll be heading places.
Tell us about the bands or people in the WA music community that inspire you.
There's some noice bands coming out of Perth at the moment, Demon Days, Great Gable, The Southern River Band. From our camp all the admiration goes to Jelly who mixes our tunes, he works 36 hours a day and dreams in WAV, the boys as lethal as a honkey nut to a skateboard when it comes to tone. Top marks.
What are your plans for 2018?
Off to Europe on Monday! I'm at the airport now typing with the speed of three thumbs. We've got shows in UK, Netherlands, Germany and France and then back in October for the Social Candy tour around Australia! There's great adventures to be had.

This is a party - specifically one in the throes of peak debauchery. PPC don't so much as throw caution to the wind as they incinerate caution and launch the ashes from a chopper.

There's something Baroque-esque about those guitar breakdowns and embellishments. Bach could never be that full fuckin' throttle tho.
