In late September 2004 on a night like any other, singer-songwriter Ben Stiel popped around for a quiet jam with established but dormant Canberra duo Cous and Quagmire was born… Eighteen months later and after 500 CD sales, a second placing in the Canberra Acoustic Challenge, an appearance on ABC 666 radio, two National Folk Festivals, and a Canberra Day performance on Stage 88 (sharing the bill with Alex Lloyd and Something for Kate) Quagmire’s profile had grown sufficiently to attract the talents of jazz percussionist Andrew Mitchell, adding a new dimension to the sound. Quagmire is an acoustic 4-piece with an emphasis on intricate three-part vocal harmonies, melodic guitar arrangements and percussive rhythms. Influences range from styles as diverse as funk, country music and flamenco with inflections of jazz. Their “tight harmonies [and] nice acoustic guitar based sound” is often likened to a contemporary Crosby, Stills and Nash and fans of The Eagles or even Maroon 5 unplugged will find a familiar appeal in Quagmire’s music.
