Bio

Melbourne three piece laid down a challenge to themselves by cheekily calling themselves As A Rival. “I just want it to be different, as a rival to everything that’s out there…” was their mantra, and they will be laying down the gauntlet by releasing their debut album entitled By Design in February 2016 as a war cry of sorts, as well as a tongue in cheek declaration to other bands. Primarily their band moniker is a constant reminder to themselves. - to always work hard, and play harder and continually raise the bar.

As A Rival are a rock band, who produce an onslaught of surging riffs and anthemic melodies, fused from the fire of their live performance that demands attention, leaving nothing to the imagination. Influenced by an array of genres, anchored by rock and punk to define their sound.

In 2015, As A Rival returned to the studio to record their debut album, By Design. Recorded and co-produced by Tom Read (Bodyjar) and mixed by Grammy Award winning producer Adam Kasper (Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Soundgarden), the album sees a maturity in songwriting, surpassing the promise and expectations built from previous releases. By Design boasts a myriad of guests including Grant Relf & Shane Wakker (Bodyjar), Rich Hall (Laser Brains) and Charlie Zulu (Darn Matter).

From Pete Cerni’s opening growl, ‘Can’t stand and watch you throw it all away’, the tone is set for the coming assault. With the driving beat of Time Flies A Fear, the intensity of Fire!Fire!Fire!, the groove of Arrow to the Knee, and punch of Obsolete, this twelve song opus is packed with energy and drive.

As the album took form, Cerni, songwriter and sole constant of the project, realised he needed musicians who would help deliver his vision. Showing Read early demos for feedback and guidance, his offer to record the album was immediate. Relf and Wakker jumped at the opportunity to supply the bass and drums respectively, and the trio formed the bases going into the studio.

Adam Kasper has produced some of the most influential albums of the past twenty years. Kasper was blown away with the standard of the tracks presented, and was excited to get to work. His touch and experience took the album to another level and is invoked in his own statement, ‘damn, love this record’.

With the album completed, Cerni enlisted the services of Kylie Groth (We Disappear) on bass and Nathan Wheatley (The DieCasts) on drums to complete the live line up. Known by Cerni from the local scene, upon hearing the vacancy, Groth approached Cerni to fill the bass duties. Her punchy bass delivery and strong backups are a welcome addition. Wheatley, who had been playing in rock & metal bands, was known to Groth and she managed to lure him into the fold. His energy and technique is a perfect fit for As A Rival’s live performance, and this new formula has injected a new fire into the band.

Beginning from an accumulation of bedroom demos, the premise for As A Rival was to challenge themselves musically and become a rival to what was on offer. The year 2011 saw the release of the Reminder Designer EP, which was followed by the acclaimed Concerning Trends EP in 2013. Playing live is where the band feels most at home, touring along the east coast of Australia, both metro and regional since their inception, stamping a claim as one of Australia’s most entertaining live bands.

As A Rival are super excited to release their debut album By Design in February 2016. It contains twelve fast-paced tracks which are urgent, hard-hitting, instant and furious, and the band will be playing songs off the release when they hit the road for a national tour through February through to April.

This is solid stuff from As A Rival. Great big surging riff that doesn't let up for two and few minutes.

That huge guitar riff just smacks you in the face from the start and then it's on! For the Foo Fighters & QOTSA fans.

Explosions come to mind as the band kicks in like a sudden intruder kicking in your front door. After months of quiet, it would seem that As A Rival have a thing or 2 to prove and Warm Gun, taken from the up coming EP, Concerning Trends, launches at you and demands your attention. Look out for in the coming months, As A Rival, will be a band you wish you had known about sooner...
