Bio

A mixture of rock riffs and punk sensibilities, catchy hooks and melodic anthems, As A Rival are fast becoming one of the most hard-working, explosive live bands on the Australian punk rock scene. The band continues to deliver upon their unrelenting live shows, clearing the self-raised bar with ease.

Comprising of Pete Cerni (vox/guitar), Nathan Wheatley (drums/vox) and Paul Anderson (bass), 2016 saw the tech-punk-prog outfit rise in stature releasing their debut album, ‘By Design’, supported by 2 national tours and gaining their first major support slot, playing at 170 Russell.

Dropping the music video for single ‘Obsolete’ mid-July, a punk infused anthem that tackles fighting the reality of aging and fear of irrelevance that comes with it. The clip was well received, achieving their debut appearance of ABC’s RAGE music program, where it stayed on rotation for 5 straight weeks. By years end, As A Rival had played over 30 shows across 6 states, building upon their fan base and growing their live show reputation.

2017 sees no change in pace as the juggernaut rolls on. Heading into the studio to record their 2nd album at ‘The Studios In The City’, produced by Tom Larkin (Shihad) & Sam Sproull. This next release will build upon the success of their debut, promising a driven, sonic deluge.

Their debut album, By Design, recorded and co-produced by Tom Read (Bodyjar) and mixed by Grammy Award winning producer Adam Kasper (Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age), the album saw a maturity in songwriting, surpassing the promise and expectations built from previous releases. From Cerni’s opening growl, ‘Can’t stand and watch you throw it all away’, the tone is set for the coming assault. With the driving beat of Time Flies A Fear, the intensity of Fire!Fire!Fire!, and groove of Arrow to the Knee, this twelve song opus is packed with energy and drive. By Design boasts a myriad of guests including Grant Relf & Shane Wakker (Bodyjar), Rich Hall (Laser Brains) and Charlie Zulu (Darn Matter).

Beginning from an accumulation of bedroom demos, the premise for As A Rival was to be challenged musically and become a rival to what was on offer. The year 2011 saw the release of the Reminder Designer EP, which was followed by the acclaimed Concerning Trends EP in 2013. Playing live is where the band feels most at home, touring along the east coast of Australia, both metro and regional since their inception, stamping a claim as one of Australia’s most entertaining live bands.

This is solid stuff from As A Rival. Great big surging riff that doesn't let up for two and few minutes.

That huge guitar riff just smacks you in the face from the start and then it's on! For the Foo Fighters & QOTSA fans.

If bullet hell was a music genre, as a rival would be its flagship. So glad I got to see yall live!
