Bio

Revealing yet another side to her artistry, Sydney based singer, songwriter and producer romæo releases ‘mourning,’ showcasing her mesmerising and diaristic composition style. Opening with a minimal trip-hop beat and raw vocals, romæo creates an intimate and nostalgic mood. With the use of swelling synths, nuanced percussion, and hints of experimental production, ‘mourning’ then evolves into an organised chaos. Lyrically, romæo details the process of accepting someone for who they are even though it may hurt you.

romæo elaborates “I was having a hard time with a family member essentially ghosting me. I had no clue why and while we are in touch again, I’m still not sure why it ever happened. At the time, I came across a YouTube video about difficult family relationships. One therapist suggested we can ‘mourn the relationship we want’ with an individual, accept who they are, and move past the disappointment we feel everytime they act as themselves. Sometimes you must maintain a relationship with someone on the terms within which they are capable. This song is me grappling with that realisation and trying to let go of the type of person I wish this individual was. I’m yet to succeed.”

Last year, romæo impressed fans and industry with her debut single ‘revealed’ and its follow-up ‘stare’. Both tracks gave listeners a taste of her ethereal pop style but guaranteed audiences to expect the unexpected. romæo scored rotation on FBi and SYN Radio as well as plays across an array Australian radio stations - triple j, double j, Edge Radio, Radio Adelaide, RRR, and more! The Sydney based creative was also featured on the December 2020 compilation by Tim Shiel’s label Spirit Level titled Kindred Spirits 3 with ‘wish’. romæo is developing a name for herself as a dynamic performer, having played exclusively sold-out gigs across various Sydney venues.

Already, romæo has been awarded the Generations fellowship from Create NSW, Astral People and the Powerhouse Museum, recognising her talent as an artist and helping guide her in further honing her proficiency.

Hearing that portishead influences floating through really smoothly on this one! What a great lyric to open with "I guess I better mourn, the relationship I want"

romaeo's one to keep an eye on with these dreamy textures. This latest track is a fleeting moment that you wish stayed for longer.
