The Schoolly Crew are a group of 'Alywarre' (pronounced Yawada) young people from one of the most remote Indigenous communities in Australia (possibly the world) - Alparrurulam NT. (700kms from Alice Springs, 300km from Mt Isa). These songs are the outcome of a four week mentoring program with Desert Pea Media, a community & cultural development organisation working in remote and regional indigenous communities since 2003. Desert Pea Media delivers innovative 'hip hop literacy programs', where songs are written with young people, with the objective of empowering, educating and advocating awareness of local social and cultural issues. This song is pretty catchy and has some fascinating imagery. I think it should get more exposure because it is not only contains an important message but it is also great to hear these young people's voices from places that so many of us in Australia have never been. These people have great musical talent!
