Bio
Since the release of Good Thing late in 2011, Seven has risen from relative obscurity to being heralded as ‘the one to watch’ amongst his peers. Unwaveringly proud of his Gold Coast home, Seven’s (Zach Humphrey) back catalogue plays like a collage to the most classic summers. It is this refreshing take on the Australian Hip Hop genre that has seen Seven’s list of accolades and achievements grow rapidly in the last 24 months. After winning Triple J Unearthed’s ‘Mphazes’ competition with ‘Possums’, he went on to tour with Horrorshow and Spit Syndicate during 2011 promoting the debut Seven EP. Forever working, Seven went on to release the Floated EP in early 2012 and like ‘Possums’ before it, first single ‘Good Thing’ received High Rotation on national broadcaster JJJ aswell as being featured on numerous community radio stations and topping the AIR Independent radio charts for four consecutive weeks. This was not unnoticed by his peers; Seven has since been national support for 360 and Drapht, co-headlined an East Coast Tour with Allday, supported Spit Syndicate for their home town launch and delivered a red-hot set at both Sprung Festival’s. Renowned for his wild yet introspective live shows with Brisbane ally, Mr. Hill; the pair are in hot demand. “Outside, Seven stumbled onstage through the rain, swigging from a wine bottle and brandishing an inflatable dolphin: the Gold Coast version of Capt. Jack Sparrow. He delivered an infectious set of dance hip hop with fellow emcee Mr. Hill, with variations from demented jumping to stoned-out-of-your-brains swaying. All tastes have been catered for here, provided your number one priority is partying.” Frances Vinall, Tonedeaf.com.au After a year working on a greatly successful YouTube project with Mr Hill (netting over 200 000 views), Seven is now ready to release his third and final EP, In Transit. Darker than his previous EP’s, In Transit takes a look at the chaotic and nomadic life of Zach’s last two years. Seven has quickly cemented himself as a stayer amongst his peers and he’s nowhere near finished. In Transit is available for pre-order from May 31 via sevensies.bigcartel.com or iTunes. Seven is a 22 year old MC from the gold Coast. He won the opportunity to have his tracks professionally produced by M-Phazes.
Tell us about your music – how did you develop flow?
Practise practise practise! I just kept writing until I didn’t dislike the stuff I was writing anymore. I think honest feedback from good friends helps alot too, if people aren’t letting you know that maybe you sound a little forced or rushed within verses, and you don’t recognise it, how can you progress?
Who are your influences?
I like a very, very wide range of music but principally the group of artist’s I generally take the most from would be Atmosphere, Jehst, The Butterfly Effect (before Imago), Dead Letter Circus, Klaxxons, Illzilla and Mantra, Phoenix, Horrorshow, and definitely Urthboy for the sheer energy in his live shows.
Tell us about working with M-Phazes.
I was so lucky to be given the opportunity to work with a guy that’s so established and very talented. It was very easy to get all ideas across, going both ways, Phazes approached us with a whole bunch of ideas that he had and it of course sounded like they would be super favourable to get a great final result. He was right, the live keys and bass sound awesome and his little tweaks have improved the song no-end I think.
What’s coming up in the future?
More and more, which is awesome! I’m working in the studio alot with DJ Butcher, who’s a bit of a genius himself, to get my EP finalised and polished for its release in the first week of August. Other than that, I’m doing a few gigs around south east Queensland and will be going on the road in August or September with Born Fresh Records to show as many people as possible how we like to have a good time!
Australian music is?
Honest!
