Bio
Perth Avant-folk darlings Simone & Girlfunkle are pleased to announce the March 24 arrival of their sophomore album Hold On, the much-anticipated follow up to 2013’s Hurry, Harry which was hailed as “a debut that has no weak points.” (X-Press Magazine).
Spearheaded by new single Girls, a self-described war cry declaring that their gender-equal band won't be stepped on.
Recorded and mixed at Blackbird Studios by the golden-eared Dave Parkin (Tired Lion, Jebediah) and mastered by ARIA award winning engineer William Bowden (Gotye, Emma Louise), Hold On varies from uplifting melodic-pop to soul-bearing emotional folk-simplicity; the delightful vocals and instrumentation make this album a sonically satisfying listen.
Since forming on a hazy sun-drenched afternoon in North Perth, Simone & Girlfunkle's deserving reputation has resulted in slots alongside some of Australia's finest including Holly Throsby, Wendy Matthews and All Our Exes Live in Texas, while notching up performances at Southbound, St. Kilda Festival, State of the Art, Nannup Music Festival, Port City Folk Festival, Channel Nine's The Weekend Today Show and Fairbridge Folk Festival where "...the girls' flawless harmonies were a force to be reckoned with." (themusic.com.au).

Tell us about your music - how did you develop your sound?
I'm not sure how we developed our sound it just developed over time without us realising you could do that. Our music has many many layers of harmonies in it, I think we just kept adding lady voices and reverb until the track almost falls in on itself.
What’s the Simone and Girlfunkle live show like?
Sometimes we have 7 people going full throttle and in other moments it's very quiet. The only thing you can count on at any given time is that there is maximum harmony and that we are enjoying every second.
Tell us about the bands, producers and people in the WA music community that inspire you.
I'm really inspired by artists who can re-invent themselves. I find Abbe May just an incredible inspiration she is always sticking up for our local scene and always pushing the boundaries of her own music. She's great! Also I'm very proud of the work that WAM does for our local scene. These guys are a not-for-profit that always have WA muso's backs. They are are constantly trying to get WA music recognized and showcased and they are all really lovely people with hearts of gold.
What’s the best advice you’ve been given and by who?
I once had the incredible opportunity to learn about music management by the JB Seed. There someone said to me that you should never compare your musical career with anyone else's and all you need to do in music management is manage the goals of the people you keep close in your band. We never wanted anything but to enjoy each others company and make music we were proud of. We suddenly were the most succesful band in Australia after that quote.
What else is coming up for you in 2013?
We are playing Bigsound in a few weeks and then off to Melbourne to play some shows, then we come back to our hometown Perth and play a gig with the lovely Tigertown. Other than all that fun stuff we are hoping to go down south and write some more music and eat steaks in a town that time forgot. Bring on the future!
Australian music is…?
…freakin awesome!!
