Sleepy West are a folk-inspired five piece from the regional Victorian town of Bendigo. Their style isn’t defined by a single genre, but the words Americana, country and rock crop up often. Think Marlon Williams meets Boy and Bear: the delicious mix of country twang and pop hooks will stay with you long after each song ends.
Founded by vocalist and lead lyricist Joel English in 2014, the lineup has grown to include Jordan Allen on vocals and lead guitar, Jayme Tolley on drums, Brenton Rice on keys and vocals and Kai Lane U’Ren on bass.
Hailing from a town of strong musical talent makes for excellent inspiration, with Joel’s lyrics covering everything from “heart-on-your-sleeve” lovelorn laments to empowering choruses about believing the best in people, no matter what they’ve done wrong.
It’s also this regional advantage that allowed the Sleepy West boys to polish their stage presence. After a number of headline shows across Bendigo, Castlemaine and the Macedon Ranges, the five-piece have been able to bring their well-oiled set to renowned Melbourne institutions of music, including The Spotted Mallard in Brunswick and Bar Open in Fitzroy.
They look to 2019 with a new EP and a renewed passion for live gigs. Having spent so long refining their latest offering Blood & Wine in the studio with producer David Carr, Joel, Jordan Jayme, Brenton and Kai are ready to present the new and improved Sleepy West to the world.
