Bio

Smash Mystery are a young band with a passion for pumping music that’s infectious. It all began in 2010, when three feisty girls and the sweetest boy in town got together for a jam in a shed in Bellingen, NSW. Since then they’ve written a stack of plucky, indie tunes, reached the top 5 in the rock charts of Triple J’s 2011 Unearthed High competition, recorded two EPs, and collected a couple of song writing gongs along the way. Mash up 50s rock n roll, 60s girl groups, 70s punk and 90s grunge – all done with an ear for a catchy pop tune and you start to get it. Like the Ramones having a party at the Pixies’ house while Jack White supervises and the Runaways run amok when the adults are distracted. When sassy lead vocalist and bassist Acacia Pip, 16 belts “if you don’t like it... well I DONT’T CARE!” you know she really means it and Kayla, 16 super cool and talented channels Joan Jett with her white Gibson. Jemima, 17, is already a guitar goddess with a fondness for effects and Noah 14, bangs ‘em hard and bangs ‘em loud, providing the rhythm to all the mayhem up front. Everyone writes songs and sings backups, with some gorgeous harmonies coming through the wall of noise. In August 2012, a year after their first self titled EP, Smash Mystery once again headed north for a wild three days of hormones raging in the farmhouse studio of veteran musician and producer Steve Reynolds and former Muzzy Pep frontman Scott Blackley. And out has popped another supersonic baby - EP “Turn on Your Hello”. The band has developed musically without losing any of their raw spontaneity. In a feat that mystifies seasoned pros, the band are consistently able to turn out short, sharp, shiny pop songs with humour, insightful observation and their own brand of emancipated quirk. The band is gigging frequently up and down the coast, they’ve got their oldies off the couch and back having a better social life than they’ve had since 1999. Grab a copy of the new EP “Turn on your Hello” before they’re gone or catch a gig soon. It’s almost too late to say you saw them before they were huge. Highlights: ♥ Reached Top 5 Triple J’s 2011 and 2013 Unearthed High Rock Charts. Triple Js’ The Doctor says “…that guitar sound in the solo rules!” and Dan Buhagiar “Loose, dirty, full of attitude and totally captivating.” ♥ Playing 2012 Mazstock festival in Lisomre. The Northern Star gushed “While most 14-year-olds impress their parents' mates with sporting and academic accolades, the four wunderkinds of punk band Smash Mystery have been lured back to play at the North Coast National by the stunned local Generation X punk scene.” ♥ Support for The Spazzy’s in Lismore NYE 2013 ♥ Winner 2012 NSW ETrack Challenge for song writing presented at the Sydney Opera House for their original track 'We’re all Weird'. ♥ Third 2012 Australian Children’s Music Foundation’s national song-writing competition for original 'This Aint no Love Song'. ♥ Video clip for Dolls made by north coast filmmaker Simon Portus www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4TczNr0QBc ♥ TV appearances including ABC Open and ABC3’s 3on3 show with Kane Tremills. ♥ Release of a DIY music video for their grungy song 'Shout It Out Loud'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuP05e_M_Jk&

Man, I love this - such a great rhythm that's really strengthened by all the instruments, and such a fantastic vocal line! Love those "da dada dada daaa" parts, and the sound on that guitar solo rocks!
