Bio

Drawing influence from the story-telling of Jeff Buckley and sinister melodies of Radiohead, Sydney trio St Joan fuse psychedelia, blues, indie and folk to create vulnerable and dynamic music.

Some songs connect like no others can. Perhaps it’s a mesmerising voice, or an undeniable melody, or in this case, it’s the story and the raw emotion of a piece that grips your heart, tightens your chest and momentarily takes your breath away.

In the same way that Bon Iver casts a spell over the listener with haunted yet vulnerable music; Daniel, Christopher and Alasdair facilitate the connection from artist to audience and pain to peace with their intimate and engaging music.

St Joan are a meticulous band; often it’s the space in between the notes that provokes as much of a reaction as the ones that are strummed. Daniel’s commanding vocals, reminiscent of Jeff Buckley, are a call to arms as the sound envelopes you. Meanwhile, Christopher and Alasdair add a dynamic drum and bass unison that amplifies the trio's sound to huge psychedelia heights– it’s hard to believe that only three people are behind such surrounding music. That’s the result of five years of songwriting and soul-searching.

“We want to give an anthem to life’s shades and colours,” Daniel describes. “We want to put melody and word to indescribable loss and unimaginable joy.” The stories may be individualised, but the message is one that can resonate with any listener.

After a plethora of singles over the last few years, navigating through family ties, relationships and brotherhood, St. Joan are preparing their debut EP “Burning Home” which peers in through the flame lit walls of a model home to reveal the hidden frailty within.
“Burning Home” will be available on all streaming services Friday, October 11.

Wandering into a clearing (not a field, not a paddock, not a valley - I'm very specific about this imagery) as thunder rolls above and this is the soundtrack. It's wide open and with the chance of lightning striking.
