About
Hailing from the rugged heartland of the New South Wales south coast, Steven Smyth's roots in music can be traced back, past adolescent forays into punk, folk and rock, to a childhood of Sunday gospel sessions. Steve, a kid who always seemed to be on the move, music became part of an ever-changing landscape. "Every Sunday, without fail, I had music running live through my veins," he says,"I guess from that I understood the power and undercurrents that music had - I realised how it could instantly change the feeling in a room." At the age of eight, he commandeered his sister's classical guitar.To this day, Steve confesses to being mostly self-taught. At 14, he started a short-lived punk band called Inane. At 16, he performed Jeff Buckley's Grace to an enraptured audience at Vietnam's first western concert since the1960s. By his late teens it was all about Bob Dylan.
