Bio

Super Massive is the collaboration of singer/writer Malina Hamilton-Smith and drummer/composer Glenn Abbott, electro-laced sci funk alterna-pop-rock explorers carving a sexy new sonic path between dance and rock.... Together the pair makes intense, exhilarating and dynamic electro/alternative/pop music, driven by funky dance grooves and delivered with the lustiness of a rock band. The result is a totally unique blend of styles and a sound that's all their own. Joined live onstage by Jed Wesley-Smith on bass and Louis Georg on guitar, Super Massive have toured Australia & Asia receiving rave reviews, hot ticket recommendations & hit predictions. The band has played some massive festivals in Asia as well as back home eg. BigSound, Australia Day in the Rocks and Surry Hills Festival, playing alongside artists as diverse as Bertie Blackman, Washington, Bluejuice, Ash Grunwald, Machine Gun Fellatio, Seabellies, Def FX and Dappled Cities. MX Magazine has featured Super Massive on the cover as “one of Sydney’s best emerging electronic/dance/rock bands”; Time Off has named them a band “On The Up” and the now sadly defunct indie music TV show Scout TV named them one of the Top 5 breakthrough Australian bands of 2009 alongside The Jezabels and Art Vs Science. The duo also have a MusicOz Award for Best Alternative Artist under their belts. Their debut single "Fists In My Pocket" shot to #1 on the Triple J Unearthed Dance Chart, remaining in the top 5 for two months. The song scored repeat airplay on Triple J on the Friday night dance show and featured on the Funkcast Podcast. In 2010 Super Massive were invited to collaborate on an interactive art installation for Berkeley University California with new media artist Julia Burns. The band has released one self-titled EP, which includes award winning track "Fists In My Pocket", and a follow up single "Get Me Out Of My Head" through MGM and iTunes. Super Massive are just finishing work on their debut album, with first single In The Twilight... launched recently at FBi Social. Other recent gigs include a private corporate gig for children’s literacy charity Room To Read and support for legendary electro-rock band Def FX at the Cambridge in Newcastle this month. The band is set to play Brighton Up Bar on Friday 3 January.

There certainly is a lot going on here, with a big wave of sounds and movements crammed together. Gotta give this act some kudos for throwing it all out there with energy and gloss up to 11.

Super Massive have continued their charge with their special brand of sci-if pop. This piece is a bit darker and somber compared to the energetic sounds of Fist in my pocket. There is some great dark atmosphere which is further driven by Malina's powerfully passionate vocals! Hopefully there is more to come soon (4.5 stars)!
