Bio

The first thing that strikes you about Thandi Phoenix is her voice. Powerful and honest, her vocals are the sort that will stop you in your tracks.

At just 23, the Sydney singer-songwriter has earned her place as one of Australia’s most captivating new talents, with songs that blend pop with electronica and raw, honest storytelling. Her talents come endorsed by internationals like Jhene Aiko, Tinashe, Rudimental and Tinie Tempah, all of whom have called on Thandi for support slots on their Australian tours. This month she’ll hit the road again, joining Vera Blue on her upcoming national run of shows.

Thandi Phoenix’s new single is ‘Standing Too Close’, a song about the push and pull of a relationship you know you shouldn’t be in, but can’t stay away from. Hints of UK garage and South African house -- a sound inspired by Thandi’s own South African heritage -- add an edge and rhythm to the melodic, electronic production.

Thandi’s music is already hitting the right notes: her 2016 single ‘Tell Me Where All The Lovers Have Gone’ was added to full rotation on triple j, as well as hitting #1 on Spotify’s Australian viral charts. Her debut 2015 single ‘Come Around’ scored a personal shout-out from Music Director Richard Kingsmill and laid the groundwork for her being named FBi Radio’s Independent Artist of the Week.

Her talents have also seen Thandi called on by some of Australia’s biggest talents: last year she performed together with Ta-ku, Wafia and Sampa The Great at the Sydney Opera House, as well as singing in Just A Gent’s triple j Like A Version. She’s also been called on for sets at top-tier festivals like Splendour in the Grass, Soulfest and Bluesfest.

Whatever the setting, Thandi’s performances are about expression and honesty. “My music’s always very personal,” she says. “It comes from the soul.”
