Adelaide three-piece THANES are mostly concerned with kosmische soundscapes put to motorik-machine rhythms using a combination of bass VI riffs that’d give Peter Hook night-sweats, drifting female vocals that range from the ethereal to the guttural, and a bank - nay - a wall of synthesisers, vocoders and esoteric tech miscellanea. Together, they form a whole that is not only entirely idiosyncratic, but deeply melodic and expansive whilst also retaining drive and edge. This can only be a result of their antipodean, if not downright paradoxical influences. Whilst the nucleus of their sound is formed around an obsession with the West German krautrock scene, their tones are laced with the synth-wave-Cold-War-paranoia of the 1980s. They might be exploring the outlying galaxies of the universe, but they're determined to do it with post-punk spit, new wave polish and a melange of all things synthetic.
