Bio
Somewhere underground lies a whole other world. Human-like things lurk in the stygian depths, making a home for themselves in murky, shadowy places. Something stirs inside the walls of buildings, underneath floorboards, in the sewers, and that thing is:
TOBACCO RAT
Tobacco Rat, a.k.a. Jake Steele, has established himself as one of the most unique and distinct voices in
the underground Australian electronic music scene. Creating eerie industrial textures grafted to warped
and intense beats and melodies, he aims to sonically explore urban decay and musical boundaries, while
remaining conscious of compelling his audience with his experimental dubstep onslaughts.
With praise from triple j, giving regular rotation to Snarl (2018) and Gangsta (2017) he’s received celebration from the
likes of NestHQ, The Music, Pilerats and The Interns and has been awarded WAMi Best Electronic
Act (Live) at the 2017 Awards and Best Electronic Track for Trenchtown 2020 (2016) and Infra (2017) at
the WAM Song of the Year Awards.
His 2019 release calendar has already seen the unleashing of Mudpool on the compilation LP Saturated
Warriors (Saturate Records / Sleeveless Records); a remix of Jalaya’s (USA) single Resurrection for The
Untz; and the release of Fax Error, a collaboration track with RaptorHandz through Uncomfortable Beats.
Best experienced live, Tobacco Rat brings a dynamic and engaging live show - reactive visuals (tailor-
made for the music with onstage control) create an electrifying atmosphere made all the more intense
and visceral with the use of triggered samples and on-the-go FX.
Making regular appearances on big stages around the country (Rabbits Eat Lettuce, Groovin’ the Moo, EMCPlay (Sydney), Melbourne Music Week, Listen Out, Perth Festival) and with a long list of international supports, Tobacco Rat’s well-crafted
sensory blitzkrieg is memorable and immediate.

The RAT returns with a beast. Was waiting for that signature grit from you in this and the lead up to it was a swirly one - love the way it throws you off. I love the charge and the consistency. It's highly powered. Killer!

This is the type of rap they play in underground dungeons at 3am. I love the real dark energy here!
