Bio

Sydney based musician, singer/songwriter and artist, TOM UGLY was first seen in the public eye while still in highschool after winning the Inaugural “Unearthed High” competition on triple j – Australia’s leading alternate radio station on ABC.

Bucking the system, Tom Ugly teamed with surf-wear brand BILLABONG to put the finishing touches on his debut self-titled EP, as an alternative to traditional methods. The record peaked at #3 on the AIR indie charts and #23 on the Australian ARIA singles charts, remaining on both for 12 consecutive weeks, with its leading single Cult Romance becoming one of jjj’s most played songs of all time and 35,000+ digital downloads.

His independent ideals have come to create an intriguing blend of rock + electronica that has landed him opening slots with acts such as SIA (picked by the artist herself), Groove Armada and Simian Mobile Disco. Music festivals such as ‘Pyramid Rock’ and ‘Days Like This’ have also welcomed his billing, as well as headlining live-recorded showcase at the APPLE Store in Sydney, where he & fellow bandmates blasted hard-hitting drums, fuzzy synths & guitar solos that penetrated through the store’s iconic high glass ceilings and walls.

Often masked, and with a distinct vocal style, Tom Ugly combines traditional instrumentation with sounds of the future to create a “digital-native" style. In recent times, his music has been compared to the likes of Glass Animals, Foster the People and GORILLAZ. After recently collaborating with MARVEL & DC comic illustrators, his latest single Villain + B-side Elegant Flesh were both released on all music platforms online, towards the latter half of 2018. Featuring optimistic & airy guitar grooves with seamless falsetto, hidden beneath Villain’s cheerful & summery melody is a deep, nuanced reflection on the duality of good and evil. Its contemplative lyrics explore the nature of living creatures and the lengths they will go to, to safeguard what they love.

“Villain was born out of a meditation on the constant outflow of stories & news in modern media,” [he] says about the song. “Stories about leaders, celebrities, click-bait headlines, etc. It’s becoming increasingly more difficult to know who or what is what, which forces an obligation on us all to think twice about things now, maybe more than ever. There’s an element of self-reflection to it too, as we all face the same predicaments & questions of not knowing where the line begins to blur.”

Tom Ugly’s most recent live appearance was on the FILMINK stage at Supanova’s Comic-Convention in Brisbane + Adelaide, where he showcased a range of new tracks from his vault of unreleased material. With plans towards releasing a slew of new music and various other projects in the works, it is exciting times ahead for the masked, indie artist.

I like how it starts really dark and then brightens right up with the chorus. It's a damn catchy little chorus too! The singer hits the notes without putting on too much of an act. Very cool stuff...
