Melbourne pop rockers Uptown Ace have been rather quiet of late. However, it seems their recent hiatus from the live scene has proven fruitful, with the band reemerging from their break clutching a brand-new album in their hands. Combine & Conquer is the follow up to their highly overlooked debut album 1850 and definitely marks a new era for the band sonically. Drawing comparisons to acts such as Hüsker Dü, Tom Petty and The Smashing Pumpkins, Uptown Ace revisit the Indie Rock of the nineties, filling the air with subtle heartbreak and discontentment yet delivering it with a rhythm and swagger designed to remind you that music is still about shaking your ass.
The band set out to test their audience by serving up an epic 9-minute opening track but rest assured, the catchy pop rock songs start at track 2 and don’t stop until they bring it down for the grand finale.
Uptown Ace aim to produce songs that say something real, and they deliver it, whether live or on record, unashamedly, with the power and intensity that you would expect from a rock and roll band with nothing to lose.
