‘Hell Is Empty The Devils Are All Here’ is the new 3-track EP by Melbourne-based songwriter Paul Connor, a.k.a. Wildcat General Strike. The EP signals something of a new direction for Connor, with a slower tempo and newfound level of introspection guiding tracks which combine an emotional depth and nonchalant hip reminiscent of UK indie icons The Jesus and Mary Chain. The buzzing guitars and garage wailing of previous release ‘CODSWALLOP’ have been replaced by chiming layers of melody, hypnotically building walls of shimmering feeling around the listener. Also new in ‘Hell Is Empty’ are the backing vocals of Zoe Jackson (Prudence Rees-Lees, Grand Salvo), which add a subtle and haunting mood throughout the EP. Lyrically, a dark meditation on life, love and post-modern malaise has taken the place of Connor’s previous affection for quirky wit and irony, with lines such as ‘take a look at the people ‘round here/dropping out of a world that’s dying’ and ‘in the cold cold war you got a cold cold heart/you’ve come along long way from what Jesus said’ setting a sombre, thoughtful tone. First single ‘Ida’ combines an instantly memorable lead guitar riff with a tale of long-lost romance, before dropping into a surprisingly heartfelt falsetto middle eight and ending in an emotional swell of overdubbed riffage above a barely audible vocal-line stating ‘..and I still wonder’. "Wildcat General Strike’s music embodies the ideas of resistance and passion, all of which is executed with the same attitude and energy as past rock legends across the globe". -The Dwarf "If I could trade it all just to spend a day in the 80s I would. But the next best thing is this guy and his act - Wildcat General Strike." -The AU Review wildcatgeneralstrike.bandcamp.com. facebook.com/wildcatgeneralstrike.
