Bio

Winter Witches is a queer, (mostly) electronic music duo hailing from Adelaide (Kaurna Yerta). Fusing elements of neoclassical with slow-wave electronica, their music has recently been described as having “genuine derivations of medieval, orchestral music and experimental electronica” (Cloudberry Mornings), “brimming with fiery precision, a meaningful design, grace and charm.” (Ghettoblaster Magazine) and possessing “a darkness which drapes like a soft, purple, velvet-robe around the listener” (Emerging Indie Bands).

Within the space of eight months Winter Witches released their first three singles – ‘Train/Water’ (limited edition 7” vinyl), ‘Unspeakable Clothes/This Religion’ (released on UK label TenWest) and ‘Knightsbridge’.

In late 2017 Winter Witches undertook a national tour which saw them playing shows across five major cities, supported by artists such as Marcus Whale, Andrew Tuttle, Shoeb Ahmad, Infraghosts, Drama, Through Forest and Field, Sebastian Tomczak and Catfingers. Other performances of note include a three night sold out season at the 2017 Adelaide Fringe Festival as well as performing at events as part of both SALA and Feast Festivals.

Previous radio play has included Triple J, Double J, FreshFM, Radio Adelaide, Three D Radio, 3CR (Melbourne), Joy FM (Melbourne), 4ZZZ (Brisbane), Radio Deepland (Brazil), JXFM Radio Tokyo, 3MDR and independent Radio Berlin. They have featured in Ghettoblaster Magazine (USA), Big Takeover Magazine (USA), Zero Music (Sweden), The Sunday Experience (USA), Floorshime Zipper Boots (USA), Emerging Indie Bands and Australian Vegans Journal.

Winter Witches will be premiering a major new commissioned music work, Sentients, in 2018 at Hart’s Mill, Port Adelaide.

Their fourth single ‘The One’ was released in August 2018 and they are currently writing their debut album, Masc.

Winter Witches acknowledges the Kaurna people as the traditional and prevailing custodians of the lands on which their music is primarily created.

Very very clever song and so darkly emotive. The use of the dripping percussion really draws you in deep (ptp) to the soul of its creator and holds you there until the last breath.
Well written and beautifully crafted with a vocal ability equal to the task.
Can’t wait to hear more, hopefully with more ‘elements’ as the subject.
