Now in its 11th year, the J Awards are our annual recognition of the best Australian Music. The winners of the four award categories were announced at the J Awards ceremony and live on air Thursday November 19, 2015.

2013

The J Awards are triple j's annual celebration of the outstanding talent in the Australian music scene. There are three categories: Australian Album of the Year, Australian Music Video of the Year and Unearthed Artist of the Year. The judging period is Nov 1-Oct 31 each year. The winners will be announced on triple j on Friday November 22.

Past Album of the Year winners include Tame Impala, Gotye, Sarah Blasko, The Presets, The Panics, Hilltop Hoods and Wolfmother.

The Unearthed J Award - introduced in 2007 - has recognised The Rubens, Ball Park Music, Boy & Bear, Young & Restless, John Steel Singers & The Middle East.

The Australian Music Video of the Year J Award - introduced in 2008 - recognises the year's most outstanding, original and creative music video. It's been awarded to Kris Moyes (Kirin J Callinan - 'Way II War'), Emma Tomelty (Hermitude - 'Speak Of The Devil'), Mairi Cameron & Stephen Lance (Megan Washington - 'Sunday Best'), Alex Roberts (Art vs Science - 'Parlez Vous Francais') and Mike Daly (The Herd - '20/20').

On top of that in 2008, triple j introduced The Australian Music Video of the Year for outstanding, original and creative music video. Last year's award went to Mairi Cameron and Stephen Lance for their direction on Megan Washington’s Sunday Best. In its first year the award was given to Director, Mike Daly for his work on The Herd’s video for 20/20. In 2009 it went to Alex Roberts, director of Art vs Science’s ‘Parlez Vous Francais’.

In the three short years of its existence, the J Award has gained a reputation for earmarking the best talent this country has to offer.

There’s so much talent that in 2007, triple j introduced the Unearthed J Award – awarded by triple j to an Unearthed artist who has demonstrated the most musical growth and shows the greatest potential to make a contribution to the Australian music industry (taken out for the first time by young punkers Young & Restless).

In 2008, triple j is proud to introduce a new category to the freshly-minted J Awards (plural!). The Australian Music Video of the Year will be selected by triple j tv for its outstanding achievement as an Australian musical video work of art, based on its creativity, originality and its technical excellence.
