Tobacco Rat is the solo project of accomplished WA producer / composer Jake Steele. For Steele, who has created electronic pop and performed live as a part of multi award winners Kučka, as well as performing audiovisual beat experimentation's as Yarhkob, Tobacco Rat is a new alias through which Steele can delve deeper into darker, subterranean music styles. In the rat sack is a varied mix of electronic, bass, futurebeat, industrial, techno and hip hop styles; which Tobacco Rat expertly meshes together, resulting in wild, heavy beats with warped, bass-led grooves. Field recordings play a huge part in Tobacco Ratʼs sound with Steele scouring construction sites to drag out all manner of scrap metal and machinery parts which he uses to record industrial-sounding samples. Tobacco Rat is a project ideally experienced live, where an array of elements comes together for a dynamic and engaging live show. Smoke machines and custom reactive visuals, multiple MIDI controllers and a giant albino rat create an electrifying atmosphere. Recent times has seen Tobacco Rat complete his first national tour in support of his debut E.P. 'Subsistence', win Best Electronic Track (Trenchtown 2020/Infra) two years in a row at the WAM Awards and had his last single 'Infra' being added to high rotation on Triple J Unearthed Radio, which contributed to him winning the Triple J Unearthed competition to open up the Listen Out Festival in Perth. Tobacco Rat has since played Groovin The Moo and also supported Empire Of The Sun in Los Angeles. With a forthcoming new EP due out on Trench Records, remixes, another national tour, festival appearances, national supports, new music videos and 3d printed merchandise the future looks exciting for Tobacco Rat.
