Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?
Two chicks; three dudes. The sound we now know to be WAAX developed out of being a show-focused band. We just wanted our shows to be exciting and intense; and that was naturally manifested in our recordings. Our songs are like a harsh aural reality-check with an unexpected nurturing side – kind of like a tough mother-figure filtered through a shitload of fuzz.

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?
It keeps us somewhat sane.

You’re one of the winners of our BIGSOUND competition. What can punters at our BIGSOUND showcase expect from the WAAX live show?
Honestly, you’ll be immersed in something you wouldn’t expect of 5 ratbags from Brisbane. We’re about mood. Sometimes loud and angsty; sometimes super reflective – but there’s always passion and I can guarantee you will be more than entertained.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?
Patience is so important, keep going and things will be delivered to you – our buddy Tyler from Soundpound.

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?
'Vitriol' by Bluejuice. Such a fun song.

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?
'Never Tear Us Apart' by INXS. Makes me cry or feel like crying every time.

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?
Jagwar Ma! Any track by those guys.

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?
Went to go see Ayla at Black Bear Lodge. She had some real sweet tunes!

Tell us about the bands or people in the Queensland music community that inspire you.
We’re real inspired by bands like DZ Deathrays or Violent Soho to more local heroes Baskervillain…And of course all those crazy event-wizard people like Lachie who runs Kaleidoscope Festival or Ray who runs Psych Night and Junglelove Festival – these dudes bust their arses to give local bands a go.

What are your plans for the rest 2014?
Firstly we just hope to survive BIGSOUND! It’s like music Christmas! And then after that, hopefully hop on some tour supports, finish off our EP…set the foundations for a ripper 2015.

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?
I’ve been writing for a little while now, and I’ve listened to different genres ever since I can remember, so you could say its a culmination of everything that is me personally/musically. When I started taking music seriously, I’d be hella critical on what I was writing/recording, break it down and pin point what I needed to improve on. Hella straight forward BUT thats how I developed the bad boi.

You were one of the winners of our Listen Out competition and just played the festival in Brisbane. How was that experience?
It was crazy! I never imagined I'd play a festival like that - so it was a trip! I really enjoyed seeing Anderson .Paak, Travis Scott and A$AP Ferg throughout the day - but my favourite experience was just being on stage with my homies and being able to share that moment with them. That was just really special to me. Thank you so much.

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?
I make music and pursue music as a career for different reasons but they are equally as important to me and what drives ya boi Midas !!!

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?
I’ve been lucky enough to have had wise heads in my life so its hard to say, but what I’ve learnt most from the people I admire is how to treat people and I feel like that’s worth its weight in gold ;)

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?
000000 - Midas.Gold. Who the F*k Kanye West tho?

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?
UV boi فوق بنفسجي - If She, If He (ft. EASTGHOST)

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?
Rockstar - Carmouflage Ro$e

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?
Gill Bate$! skkkrrrrrrr!  He always holds it down super polished performer I’ve learned a lot from him!

Tell us about the bands or people in the Brisbane music community that inspire you.
Where to start?!?! There's too much talent here right now, (we hold the torch for hip-hop rn imo). There’s I AM D, Gill Bates, Gallu$, Carmoflauge Ro$e, Erik Sanders, Tides, LimeEyed, James Angus (Jangus), Astro Travellers and like 6-7 acts more that I can’t think of right now and they ALL inspire me to work harder. It’s kind of like that for everybody in BNE, it’s competitive fo sho but the vast majority respect each other. It’s dope that cats are on the same wave length tryna build something, that inspires me.

What are your plans for the rest of 2016 and in to 2017?
I tour with Tkay Maidza in NOV!!!!! I also release my EP in OCT, a few more visuals and I’ve got a few features with some talented artists from around AUS :) maybe a couple more sneaky drops here n there ;)

Melbourne producer Alice Ivy is one of the winners of our Listen Out competition. She'll be taking her blissed out soul-inspired beats to the 909 stage of Listen Out in Melbourne this Saturday, September 24.

Read Interview

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?
I have always been super into soul music. I used to play in an all girl soul band, we used to arrange old soul classics by Marvin Gaye, Etta James, and also soul stuff by artists such as Jill Scott. Playing this music is what made me obsessed with it. A few years ago I was introduced to J Dilla and The Avalanches, and I was really inspired to make music like that - beat driven sampled soul that just made you feel good.  Once I got into production at uni I realised this is what I wanted to do!

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?
Creating music that makes people feel good and excited. I love that adrenaline rush you get when you listen to a song that you just love, I try and keep this in mind whenever I write.

What can punters expect from an Alice Ivy live show?
A really sweaty good time.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?
'Always BYO Linen' - Melinda Dine. I learnt the hard way on tour last weekend.

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?
The Avalanches - Because I'm Me

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?
Natalie Imbruglia - Shiver

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?
Christine Anu - My Island Home, classic Australiana banga.

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?
Last local show I went to was Alexander Bigg's single launch. It was phenomenal, if you haven't heard him you need to check this guy out.

Tell us about the bands or people in the Melbourne music community that inspire you.
There are so many bands in Melbourne who are absolutely killing it at the moment. Particularly recently at BigSound, it was so great seeing so many Melbourne bands up there showcasing! Artists that really inspire me are those who are amazing at what they do musically and who are just genuine people. I'm talking about artists such as Ainslie Wills and Alex Lahey - dead set legends.

What are your plans for the rest of 2016?
The rest of 2016 is looking insane, I am lucky enough to be playing some pretty amazing festivals and tours this summer! Will do some writing in between ;)
