Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?

It’s hard to define the exact process of how it developed. I spend a lot of time experimenting with different ideas and concepts. Driving a lot for work allows me to spend more time listening to different music, then when it comes to my own writing, I'm sub-consciously combining different worlds that resonate at the time.

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?

Initially it’s personal experience, live music is a big one. I take a lot of inspiration from movie scores and how they're able to influence the emotions of the audience.

What can punters expect from a Willaris K live show?

I’m playing my first live show this Friday. As I've been planning for it, i’ve found that I'm naturally gravitating towards my heavier/dancier stuff. Most of which has never been heard outside of my bedroom. Expect intense moments contrasted with intimate ambience.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?

There’s not really one piece of advice that i subscribe to, but i’m a firm believer in everything happening for a reason - whether it be positive or negative. I’d say that mentality came from my parents who always attest that you get out what you put in.

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?

No 1 Dad's - Camberwell

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?

Seekae - Void

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?

Tame Impala - Why won't you make up your mind?

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?

I saw Jagwar Ma a couple of weeks ago in Coolangatta. It was good to see a crowd come out in numbers and support that style of music locally.

Tell us about the bands or people in the North Coast music community in NSW that inspire you.

I'm quite lucky in that regard because I've got a group of close friends from school that also write music. That's a big inspiration for me. We're always pushing each other, collaborating, keeping the standards high, no beating around the bush with feedback. I'm excited for us all to be out doing our thing musically. Everyone has their own tastes which seems to be a driving force for pushing our personal boundaries. I premiered a track from Rössen Culture in my triple j mix, Grant Walker just put his first track up on unearthed, NWM that did my artwork and visuals writes, HXXD GXLD raps and Joel Cauchi is a singer/songwriter who lends his guitar expertise on a few upcoming releases. They’re all coming; keep your eyes peeled.

What are your plans for 2017?

Release an EP. Develop my live show to become as live as possible, then eventually incorporate a visual aspect. Maybe a remix.

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?
I started playing the guitar and singing very early on by copying my Dad’s band members who would always be around rehearsing in the kitchen… Some of them were proper reggae rastas. They taught me some important lessons that still emanate through my music. I spent a lot of time busking and gigging with just a guitar, exploring lots of genres and finding my own flow. Plus I’ve always been a passionate creative writer, so writing stories and rhymes and poems definitely had an effect on the type of music I make.

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?
Music is about communication first and foremost for me, so a song usually starts when thoughts manifest into lyrics (which is constantly!!). Specifically, it’s hard to pin down the source of the inspiration because it is everywhere and always. I’m very sensitive to mood and colours and always aim to paint a sonic picture to go hand in hand with the lyrics.

You’re the winner of our Field Day comp. What can punters at Field Day expect from your live show?
First of all, I still can't believe it's really happening - cannot WAIT! It’s going to be so exciting to perform the set for the first time ever with an amazing live band, and it’ll also be the first time I play some of my new music! All the support so far has been just incredible, so I’ll be looking forward to seeing some faces!

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?
The best advice I have ever received was from my Grandma... ‘Work hard and keep it real…’

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?
I’d play them The Record’s Flawed by The Delta Riggs and I’d take them for a dance down the street.

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?
I saw JOY. at Good God yesterday and she slayed!

Tell us about the bands or people in the Sydney music community that inspire you.
The sense of community in the Sydney scene is actually incredible. For real, the people that rock up to shows and are so passionate about supporting the local scene - they inspire me to strive to do my best. As far as bands, I’d say Sticky Fingers inspire me - they’re a homegrown Sydney band so it’s cool to watch how they’ve grown and kept it real.

What are your plans for 2016?
I'm writing heaps of new music so I can't wait to get into the studio again and start the recording process. And the live band will be fully up and running so looking forward to playing some more shows in 2016!

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?
I developed my sound probably though experimenting on Ableton at ridiculous hours of the early morning on school nights instead of doing homework, but that more or less evolved from being a singer songwriter playing acoustic gigs earlier on. I've always played instruments and always liked to muck around on different instruments, and especially with pedals to try and adapt sounds etc. So then that kind of transferred over to the electronic side of things when I started producing, and the sound was just built from there.

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?
I'm not really sure where I gain inspiration from to be honest, I've always played and written music growing up, so I've never really thought about it that much.

You're one of our Laneway competition winners. What can punters at Laneway in Brisbane expect from the JOY. live show?
A lot of dirty trap horns. Well, probably not. My set up is just me on stage solo pressing hundreds of buttons and hoping everything goes well. But I have heard I might be bringing a few special guests out.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?
"You don't make friends with salad" - Homer Simpson

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?
Hayden James - Something About You

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?
Montgomery - Pinata or George Maple - Vacant Space (bc so beautiful)

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?
Peking Duk - High (ft. Nicole Millar)

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?
OZfest at the Gold Coast last night. Very crazy, hectic line up. The Creases, Allday, Kingswood, The Preatures and Illy played and their sets were all 10/10 epic.

Tell us about the bands or people in the Brisbane music community that inspire you.
There are lots of rad bands and people in the Brisbane community that inspire me. In particular my m8's The Cairos, The Creases and Vancouver Sleep Clinic. The Cairos are all lovely dudes, and mega talented song writers, I really look up to them. I really dig The Creases' sound, it's super refreshing and kawaii and lovely and they're all super cool dudes. Vancouver Sleep Clinic have totally nailed the whole soundscape vibe, incredible incredible polished sounds and just amazing vibes all round.

What are your plans for 2015?
I will be embarking off around 'straya for plenty of shows soon, I am supporting the FLAMINGO boys on their national tour in a couple of weeks, followed by a couple of other small tours. In between shows I am planning to write a bunch of material and hopefully work on a big EP, or mini LP depending on how everything goes, and apart from that, I plan to eat lots of Pringles by the pool in the sun and not have to worry about going to university.

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?
I’m still developing my sound!  I listen to everything so my music is a bit mish mash, I think that’s cool though.

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?
I want to document being human and imperfect and then make people feel something with that.

What can punters expect from a Mallrat live show?
Dancing!

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?
I’m learning to drive right now and dad told me “know what you’re doing when you approach a roundabout” and “don’t spend your whole life slowing down for speed bumps”. These are both great metaphors for life.

I haven’t been to one in ages because there aren’t enough underage shows and I’m 17! I’ve seen Gill Bates a few times though, he always kills it.

Tell us about the bands or people in your music community that inspire you.
The Brisbane music scene is so supportive, it feels like a big family. Everyone in a band is in five other bands and if you go to a local hip hop show you’ll catch all the other guys dancing and rapping along for sure.

What are your plans for the rest of 2016?
Make music, friends and travel.

UV boi

Brisbane, QLD

UV boi is an 18 year old producer from Brisbane making mellow yet heavy-hitting 808 music that's created a sea of feelings in our heart.

Read Interview

Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?

The first thing I attempted to produced when I began making music was sample based hip hop instrumentals. At the time I was listening to MF DOOM and his various aliases and Wu-tang also, this was back in 2010. The year earlier I was really into hardstyle and techno music, I know right, what a complete 180. Anyhow, I picked up interest in electronic music around late 2012 and started to dabbling with a lil bit of dubstep, trap and most recently Jersey Club. All under my first project named "EP". Throughout this time I didn't have any idea of music theory, I just had a keen ear. I took the time last year in year 12 to get piano lessons which were pretty beneficial. Fast forward to March of this year, which was when UV boi was born. With my new honed skills I returned to making hip hop but with this new UV boi spice.

What’s your greatest source of inspiration for making music?

The internet, especially via Soundcloud. There's just an endless stream of cool music on there. Some of the people I've come across on there are as young as 13 and are already doing wonders.

What can punters expect from a UV boi live show?

You can expect me dressed in a full Adidas tracksuit strapped in my durag squat for 20 minutes straight during the pre of my set. On stage, I use an APC and an MPD. Launching clips with the APC on Ableton and playing stripped sounds from my track on the MPD (eg. drums or vocal cuts or instruments, whatever really).

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?

"Make bangers" - Eli Marsland

"Keep making music. you're really good at this" - Lochie Riordan

Most importantly though, are the people who I showed my first crappy beats to and have always been supportive and seen something. Shouts out to Erina, Eoghan, Cheyne, Kai and Joe Joe.

What Australian track would you play to cheer up someone who was crying?

Renz - Look Good On Me

What Australian track would you play to someone to make them cry?

Ben Lee - Cigarettes Will Kill You (Horrorshow and Jane Tyrell Cover)

You’re the DJ at a party. The dance floor is pumping. What Australian track do you put on next?

Tkay Maidza x Battles x Conorock - Atlasaurous In Babylon (ELI Bootleg)

What was the last local gig you went to? How was it?

Ahhh I haven't been exposed to many local gigs that I haven't been apart. UV boi has only just become UV man, so I'm excited to experience those cool pub gigs.

Tell us about the bands or people in the Brisbane music community that inspire you.

Brisbane has a cool small community of electronic artists but not really many in the same line of my style though. I haven't connected with these other Brisbane artists yet mainly because they most likely don't even know my existence haha. In the future I'd like to get to know them. I had befriended two prior to creating UV boi. These cool dudes are ELI and Kraznov.

What are your plans for UV boi in 2014?

The plan for 2014 is to enjoy things and connect. A lot of cool things are happening very fast and all at once. I plan to work on an icy UV boi ep shortly, whilst still releasing singles here and there and maybe even some official remixes too. If you're a Brisbaner, you may see me out and about playing a few shows every now and then. Stay connected with me and we'll rock durags and squat together. SquatSquad

Shouts out LUCCIboys (Rappers Who Can't Rap Mixtape coming soon)
